Why does this happen?

I have a 1998 Taurus SE. The factory Head unit is the one, with the cd changer controls, but the car doesn't have the cd changer in it. The head unit does have a tape player though. The car is a lease, so I can't change anything on it till my lease is over, or I void the contract. Now, here is the problem. I have tried to use one of thos tape converters for my portable CD player, so I can listen to more than just the radio... but everytime I push the "tape" in, it clicks it from side to side, then just ejects it. I have tried 2 other tape converters, each with the same result. why is it doing this? is the head unit screwed up, or is it possible they just won't accept the converters, because it has the cd changer controls....

your unit could be dirty, also some units just dont play certain tapes ures just seems not play any if them-the cd changer thing should not affect it, that is used for when you hook up a cd changer then you can skip tracks and stuff- try hooking up a cd changer
