We had the same problem with my wife's Corolla. After replacing the starter - twice - I accidentally realized that it was a bad ground.
Try this (with a good battery); run one half of your jumper cables from the negative terminal of the battery to a clean piece of metal on the engine block. If you can get the car started, the problem was most likely a ground.
We ended up running all new ground wires because I couldn't locate the bad one. The part that really sucked was spending $300 (on a starter) to fix a $10 problem... :banghead:
Good luck!

I'm sure you know someone that has some jumper cables....?
As for them being "dirty"...not neccessarily. I disconnected all the grounds I could find, cleaned them, and it still didn't solve the problem. I ended up just buying new ground wires (3 for $10 @ Wal-Mart), completely replacing 2, and totally relocating 1. That was over a year ago with no problems since...

so the positive goes to a clean piece of metal on the engine block?

Noooooooooooooo.... Not unless you want to short out your battery!! If you run half the jumper cables from the negative terminal to the engine block & the car starts, then you'll know that the existing wires (that are connected to your negative terminal) are corroded.

well....after a long days work im back....
so check this out, i took out all my visable grounds and replaced them with the grounds from my project hatch and there was no difference. Getting pissed off i figure i have to do something to hold back this anger(the last time i punched my fender which now needs a big dent repair) so i say screw it and started pulling the dx alternator HOPING, JUST HOPING it would be compatible for fitment in my si. i was iffy on this one as well before a month ago when this problem started i took the basically new alt from my si out and had it tested. it tested a ok. well anyway to make the long story short a 91 dx alternator is compatible with that of a 91 si....so now im back and treading up the streets off a quick thought. thanks for getting the process goin

aight, here's what happened with me. i tried doing the jump start thing, and the car started up real quick. Wait, lemme back up....i took a multimeter and tested my battery, it was 5 volts. we hooked up the battery cable and the car went up to 12 volts(put the positive on the battery and the negative on the block. I started up the car and it started up VERY quick. we tested the battery again while the car was running and it was tested at 13-14 volts.i then turn off the car and try to start it back up, it was making the rrr-rrr-rrr noise then it finally started up. So is this a ground problem?
ps, how much will it cost for you to ship the scanner to area code 06340.

It seem like you may need a new battery the alt is charging but the battery isn't holding the charge.

you either need a new battery or you didnt let the battery charge up enough before you turned it off and tried to start it again
Masta

yea, i'm thinking i do need a new battery. For some reason, when i start up the car, the battery holds it's charge at 13 volts, but then when we turn off the car, it slowly loses it's charge and goes back down to 5 volts. Would that mean my battery is trash or is there something draining my battery(which there isnt cuz there isn't anything on...)?
