chain tensioner

Has anyone had problems with the original lower timing-chain tensioner on 95 M3? My engine makes a wheel-of-fortune sound at low RPM when reducing RPM and I suspect it is from a slack timing chain. This tensioner has been redesigned, maybe because of this problem. I would welcome hearing of others' experiences.

Never heard of any problems... you sure Vanna White isn't under your hood with a vibrator?

I'm going through the same thing right now and yes it is the lower chain tentioner. I've heard it's a cheap fix at around $100 for the part and $150 for the labor.

My motor does the exact same thing. If you do get it corrected, please post your findings here. I'd like to hear what was done. Thanks!

I have replaced the tensioner with the updated one. Tensioner and washer cost $78. It took me longer than expected because alignment of the tensioner shoe was not perfect and I had to apply some lateral force. Total time about 30 minutes. The loud noise at 1500-2000 RPM has stopped, but Vanna White is still under the hood if one opens it and listens carefully.

Thanks for the reply. I'll have to ask my mechanic about the redesigned lower tensioner. I kinda lost my mind trying to get that stupid death rattle corrected and spent a lot of $$ trying to track it down. He finally looked at it for 2 days trying to pinpoint the noise and couldn't. Thankfully, he didn't charge me anything. I appreciate the info.

Sorry, one more thing:
When your hear/heard this rattle, was if only AFTER the engine was warmed up? The rattle in my motor only appears after I've run it for several minutes until it's up to normal operating temp?
Is/was it the same with you?

Yes, the noise only manifests itself once the engine is warm. If you find out any other fixes pls post them.
