hey guys i just bought a 1992 turbo laser awd.... for 300 bucks but it runs really really shitty so i took the head off and i have some valves that are pretty bent up... i was on ebay and saw some heads on there... well to my point, if i where to buy a new head you think this would solve my problem or when your valves go out does it cause other problems?? oh yeah i have my 96 talon tsi (front wheel drive) should this laser be able to stay up with my talon if it was running good?
Thanks

Dude weres my dsm?

that laser.... if running well... would annialate that tsi simply because its AWD :grinno: also buy a new head, get it to shift at 9k and you'll be happy..

Shifting at 9k requires not only the proper valve train mods, but large cams, larger turbo, intake manifold, and a tranny specially built to shift properly at those rpms. Got 5 grand?

We bend valves all the time, and no other damage is done. Just look at the pistons to be sure they survived, and be sure the guides arent cracked. I would personally just get it rebuilt. Local guys here do it for 200-300 with a couple valves. Then you have a flat surface for the head gasket (very important), they can replace bad guides, and they can cut the seats and pressure test the head. There is a vfaq on how to swap it if your the type to do your own work.

another VERY important thing to consider is that a head swap requires a full timing belt job. This is not to be taken lightly. Almost every "shop," "mechanic," or "garage" people take DSMs to for tbelt jobs screw it up and cost you another head. It is NOT like other imports or cars with belts. Even the dealer can find a way to hose the job. I personally only do my own, and many people in my local DSM club come to me to have it done. There are 1000 ways to screw it up. Just a heads up ;) Good luck with it. Nice find BTW. :)

How much better would my car run if i could just start redlining at 9 grand?

High rpm torque (HP) is the key to low ETs. If you mean how much better will it run at 9k WITH all the right supporting mods, consider this. 300 ftlbs at 3k rpm is 170 hp. The same 300 ftlbs at 9000 rpm is 514 hp. This is why mods that add good tope end airflow, like intake manifolds, add 40-50 hp. At high rpm you dont have to add much torque to add lots of HP. And HP is what gets you down the track faster, not torque.
