If I'm correct I believe a regular third-gen Firebird has the v6 in them while the TransAm's have either the 305 or the 350.

Thirdgen Firebirds earlier on had either 2.5 4cylinder(not many made), 2.8 V6 ,305 4bbl V8.
The later third-gen Firebirds had either 3.1 V6, 305 TBI.

Early third-gen Trans Ams had either 305 4bbl, 305 CFI, or 305 4bbl HO.
Later third-gen Trans Ams had 305 TPI or 350 TPI.

Trans Ams usually have better ground effect and suspension.

If you want to learn more about third-gens go to www.thirdgen.org/newdesign/tech/techdb.shtm
