I have not heard the term "J" motor, but if it's a standerd US modle the only thing you need to worry about is to reuse the old throttle body and TPS sensor, the OBD2 change was in 96.

I believe the older motor does not have the tube going from the exhaust to the intake and sensor on the firewall. Be sure to use the original intake and exhaust from you car.

91-95 OBD1 "on board dianostics one"
96+ OBD2 "on boad dianostics two"

Differant ways to read the check engine light.

The tube that goes from the exhaust to the intake is the EGR, some escorts came with it some did'nt, depending on the emmitions law for a certain state.
You dont "need" EGR, the car will run fine with out it, but you will get a CEL for a while if you remove it.

When i changed the motor i also changed the exhaust manifold (to acommodate the egr) but left the intake the same.(the check engine light is on but the car runs fine. I noticed the tires on the 94 escort are 13 inch (they are brand new on the parts car i bought )when i went to exchange with my 96 escort (tires are bald) the tire is a 14 inch that sucks
