Worst gas mileage

Just filled the truck up and nearly crapped my pants! I got 12 mpg with the swampers this week? :bloated: Unless someone siphond out a 1/4 tank of fuel, something is not quite kosher? I have 32k miles! Should I try some sort of fuel system cleaner? I'll check my timing later this week.

Don't tell me now you're going to complain about the Xterra gas mileage:finger:
Actually, you commute from Tacoma to Seattle right? We've had pretty bad winds for the past week or so. I'd guess it could just be from driving against strong winds.
What do you normally get? With swampers and the SR plates (and all the other "crap" you have on there), you'd think there would be a decrease in mileage.

Yeah the winds have been whipping me the last two days driving from Tacoma to Seattle! Two hand driving with Swampers and a worn center-link! I usually get about 260 miles on a Swamper tank and 300 on a Grabber tank. This fillup I got 220!
But adding weight I figure I have:
ARB 60lbs(more than stock)
EOE sliderz 100lbs
SR skids 85lbs
5 Swampers 100lbs (more than stock)
Recovery bag and tool box 50lbs
2 people (carpool) with combined weight of 500, not including me!

You know if I had a huge commute to and from work I wouldn't be doing it in an X. I'd buy some little Hyundai beater car and rag on it. Gets better mileage and you only have to tolerate it on weekdays. :)

What size swampers are you running? That can make quite a difference. I know with my 32" tires my recorded mileage is 5.46% less than my actual mileage based on my GPS data. That equates to more than 1.5 MPG when I correct.

Brent I run the 31" so I am of 4% and 1mpg. I did the calculations long time ago.......

Well, right now, I'm getting 19 MPG running mostly stock everything. I am upgrading to 31's though. I also do 120mi a day to and from work. Keep in mind, that's only Mon-Fri. That doesn't count anything on the weekends- Trips to EOE, to Ken's for NJAX mod'ing, Skirmish USA for paintball. :sun:

On the way back from VA last weekend I got just over 17 mpg. I usually get 15 mpg. I'm running 31's and my speedometer is now correct.

Did you do something to correct it? I have 31's too, but didn't know there was anyway to correct the speedometer.

on my thanksgiving trip back to kentucky from DC i got about 11mpg. of course this is with all my mods, 32" MTR's and 4 people in the truck. driving up and down the mountains of west VA didn't help either. 190 miles on the tank when the light came on. Just over 17 gallons to fill up.

Several people have found that the X speedo is dead-on with 31" tires, meaning that it was reading a bit on the fast side with the stock tires.

Yup. If you look on the EOE website under the Rock Sliderz tab, it will quote the weight for you. Actually, I think the weight is 110lbs, but 10 lbs isn't going to do much...

Actually, I haven't notice that my speedo is off either. I never have checked it, but if it is off, it is not off by much.
But, it would be nice to know how to adjust it if I ever go with larger tires. I think that on some vehicles you can replace the speedo gears, on others there is a computer fix that can be made. I don't know how it's done on the X. I think I misread his post. I thought he was saying that he did something to correct the speedo. :smoker2:

So those Bias Ply Swampers weren't really "that much" cheaper in the long run were they?
Considering the tire flap and tread roar I hear when driving next to you I would imagine those soft tires aren't the best for commuting. :D

I got a GPS after I got the 31's so I didn't get to check it with the grabbers. On a 250 mile trip my odometer and GPS will read less than 1 mile different. The speed on the GPS matches the speedo perfectly. So the speedo must have been fast with the grabbers. I guess I'll have to go with 33's next so I can regain the miles Nissan has gotten from me.

Stationed here in Fairbanks,Alaska. Now visualize this. The temp. has been -35F, 13 miles to work one way, crank it up in the morning to warm it up say for about 15-20 minutes. Take off down the road feeling like your E-brake is on rolling on wooden blocks, not rubber. Then repeating the process in the evening to come home. 175 miles to my last tank of gas. Now thats grounds for bitching , is it not ?

i remember when i was living in the upper midwest in the 1980's it got down to -65 below wind chill factor at it's peak. the wind would come the mississippi river valley from up north. people's cars weren't starting even in their garages. i had never been in such a cold a place as that. i was a mechanic working for a goodyear. the hours were very long that winter. it totally sucked, but i had to pay the bills. i had to take my battery out of my car every night just to keep it alive and keep it warm in the house. we had two weeks worth of work waiting out in the parking lot. some of them only needed new spark plugs screwed in, but people had to wait their turn. it was nutz. i hope never to live in those temps ever again, so i do not miss them at all. i know exactly your plight and pity you and what you and your x have to go thru. BRRR... :(

This is my first winter up here. Lot of the guys i work with say it will get down to -60 and maybe even colder. I live in a little town called North Pole , yes there is a Santa Claus House here, anyway there is very little wind. My X wants just sit in the driveway till Spring . But she has not let me down yet , course i have a battery blanket, block heater, oilpan heater. I leave it plugged up for about 5 hrs before starting it. But still pretty darn cold and stiff when she gets going. Hell our commander won't let us fly at -40. Our helicopters hydraulic systems just gell up and cause our flight controls all kinds of problems. But that is fine to me , because whenever we start our engines and get the Rotor Blades turning we have to stand underneath the rotors to monitor engine and rotor blades during run-up and shut-down. YOU WANNA TALK WINDCHILL. Try Windchill that is just totally LETHAL. Later Guys

171 per tank sounds about right, roughly thats what i am getting per tank. My clutch does want to work in this cold weather. It's -39.5 here in the North Pole right now. Have a good one , stay warm

My odo usually reads about 240 miles per tank (it's obviously low because of the 32's, etc.)

Well, just about. The roads are pretty slick so I'm in 4wd most of the time. I used to get about 250 miles per tank. Once I moved up here and had to start warming it up, and driving in 4wd with the defroster on all the time, I started getting around 170 miles per tank. My best tank ever was about 280 miles freeway. I've never been that close to 300.

-40 here,10-20 minutes for a good warm-up,leave it running if you go into the store to pick something up,run errands etc. And i would almost bet there is a 100 degree difference between AK and TX. My wife is from Houston, actually Huffman. So we were there before coming to Alaska. It is expensive here also, gas is $ 1.43 a gallon. It sucks but this place is beautiful.:eek2: :eek2: :stormzap:

Gas here is .97 cents a gallon, I have only had my Xterra for going on a week now, could the fact that the 4x4 has a smaller tank than most other suv's or does the mileage just suck also??
