aurora oil pan replacement

A friend just bought an aurora and hit a curb gashing the oil pan...consequently all the oil has drained...is it difficult to replace the oil pan? Is there an actual gasket or must one be made from "the right stuff' silicone ? From what I see it is not too difficult to replace, but who knows what I will be into when I work on it. I find it hard to believe that they use a cast oil pan. Any info would be appreciated.

well when you get your new pan either the gasket should come with it or you can just buy one seperate. it shouldnt' be that hard to replace just make sure you dont over tighten the bolts just make them a little past snug, then after a week check them again and make sure there are no leaks and the bolts are tight.

I read up on that oil pan subject and from what I got step 1 = pull the motor

Most shop guides assume doing a complete reseal of the bottom end which means removing the lower half of the block.This is also sometimes called a two piece oil pan. If this is needed then yes, you have to drop the engine. It may be possible to just do the low pan in the car, but I would invest in the factory manual first. My car leaked a few drops a day so I snugged all the bolts and nuts I could reach from underneath and added one bottle of Bar's Leaks. End of problem.

where can I get that snap on program?

God bless him if if he can do it without dropping the motor I would try to figure out how not to do it and do it as a last resort !The Snap-On program we have at work my boss pays many $$$$ a year to have it.

okay heres the deal. i have a 97 oldsmobile aurora which i got for very cheap from some friends. i am a graduating senior and hardly have anymoney at all and to worsen the situation my car is my only means of transportation and i just cracked the oil pan. I bottomed out my car on accident and when i got home it was leaking quite a bit of oil. after inspection of the oil pan i found about a 3/4 inch hairline crack on the bottom front of the oil pan. considering that i dont have a lot of money i was wondering how much this would cost me to get fixed. I live in a town about 45 min from austin texas so base the price on that area. thx a bunch

For an on-the-cheap fix you could just try some auto type JB weld. You'd want to clean the crap out the area first. Having all the oil already leaked out will help this immensely. Get a tube of oil/hydrocarbon resistant metal reinforced epoxy and give it a try. It should be easy to tell if it's leaking after. Unless your crack runs all the way to the edge of the pan and through the flange, you'd stand a decent chance of plugging it up.

I know I've seen a wide variety of this stuff at Napa, but any parts store should have it. A $5-6 attempt first beats a spendy pan and pulling the engine...

I'd also like to point out that I can't think of many cars that could be worse for a college student on a shoestring budget. Between the premium gas and the wallet busting repairs that WILL be cropping up- not good. I know I'd have been screwed if I was trying to survive in school with my Aurora. Heck, my budget is borderline screwed as it is. Good luck.

If you have the V8 - you have no choice and have to pull the motor, yes it's in the manual, but you don't need the manual to see this for yourself. The problem is that the bottom of the transmission flares out and blocks access to the oil pan bolts along one entire side.

Engineers on this were complete idiots and should be shot.

I wish I had the V6 as mine leaks like an SOB!!!

I have a oldsmobile Aurora 95 . I need the gasket changed around the oil pan but the transmission seems to be in the way. Any ideas? Don't want it to just keep leaking

I read somewhere on this forum, a few years ago. That it is possible to cut the crossover pipe off, that goes around the oil pan. And having it professionally welded back. I would check with a welder first. This is something I just thought of. Ask a welder if the crack itself can be welded.
