Bought a '92 GMC Jimmy, 4x4, 4.3 vortec as a work car. Did all the usual maintenance.. oil, belt, tranny, etc etc. 1400 miles later I noticed WAY LOW oil pressure. Got home and checked it... was about 3 quarts low. Filled 'er back up and started the vehicle to watch where the leak was coming from. Crawled under, wiped down most of the oil covered bottom, started it up again and viola!! Leaking from the remote oil filter by the oil pan.

First question: Is the remote filter OEM? If so, I'd imagine it's cause of the 4x4 extras parts and lack of space.

Second question: Anyone have a diagram or know where to get one concerning the way the remote seals itself to the block? Gasket? O-Rings?

Third question: Is the unit expensive to replace? Meaning if I have to replace the two lines as well as any housing. I couldn't seem to find any info for replacement parts.

The car runs perfect with 150k miles, except it's sudden decision to POUR (not leak) oil. ANY help will be greatly appreciated.


ps.. I have seen alot of threads about the digital cluster, and I have another question about that: My water temp quit working, but it was the only one. The rest of the gauges work fine. Could it be a bad sending unit, or could the trace be cracked? Wires to the unit are plugged in and seem to be intact.

I own a 97 Jimmy with a 4.3. My front bottom of my truck was also covered in oil. I removed the plastic shield and pressure washed everything up. Air dried it very good. Started it up and after a few minutes saw the oil seeping from the crimps around the rubber hoses. Only the front hose was leaking from the remote oil filter to radiator. I spoke to someone at the dealership and he suggested to also replace the rear hose going to the engine. I did all that and replaced the radiatior fittings as well. Job well done. No more leaks!!!

Yeah, I found exactly where the leak was comming from... I was from the lines themselves, actually the o-rings for the lines. I replaced those 2 o-rings and the 2 gasket set for the part comming off the bottom of the block. No more leaks.

Thanks for the insight - glad my leak was not a blown rear seal.
I have a '93 S10 Blazer 4x4, and had the same conditions: pouring oil.
After going to the Chevy dealership, I got an o-ring & gasket kit GM#88893989 for about $5.
After removing the skid plate, the 2 bolts were removed from the adapter to the block.
There's an additional clamp at the power steering pump to hold the hoses in place. This needs to be removed to allow the adapter to slide around.
However due to the 4wd, the front differential was in the way, so I could not drop the adapter.
After blindly feeling the adapter on the top, I did not detect an old o-ring. It must have disintegrated or completely flattened or was never there. The new o-ring was able to slip into place, and was able to mount the adapter back to the block with no problem.
That fixed the leak. Took a little more than 1 hour to do this in the driveway.
Now I've got a new problem: from driving around with little oil, I've got a blown head gasket.

I also had an '88 GMC S15 which the adapter leaked. All it needed was a little bolt tightening.

I would suggest buying vinyl gloves when doing this repair, it's a very messy job.

on 89 4.3 is the oil leak at the block the same as 93? how about up top at the filter?
