Okay, I have a 91 firebird but don't know much about my car....I want to learn everything I can but don't know where to start. I don't have $ for classes yet but I want to take some. I read these forums and you might as well be speaking swahili...........seriously If anyone has any suggestions as to online sites or pages or ANYTHING. My main goal is to be able to do all of my mods myself, I have a v8 but don't know what specific kind, Only things under my hood that I know about are the extremely obvious parts (air filter, battery, dipsticks and stuff) I'm very serious about this.....any suggestions would be a blessing thanks.

That should help with the theory. You have to start messing around with the actual engine eventually too. It helps to have someone good with cars around when that happens.

Or a Chilton's Manual about your car will be nice.

Look at your vin number(left dash) and find the 8th digit then go look it up at www.thirdgen.org/newdesign/tech/techdb.shtml. This site is very informative, the chart will tell you the stock Horsepower and Torque of your car and if its TPI(Tuned Port Injection) or TBI(Throttle Body Injection).

The car came as a V6, but the prior owner put a v8 (305) in it, so I'm not sure if using the vin # would still be helpful. How else would I find out if it's tpi or tbi?

Maybe head # casting? (I don't know much about new engines and decoding them heh).

Block # casting?

where do I find that?

On a 3rd gen block I really have no clue heh.

Well to find the head castings they should be on the heads. The heads are the chambers on top of the block where the spark plugs go into. Look around there for a #.

For the block the #'s could be anywhere.

I hope someone with more information on 3rd gens responds, if not I'll try to research it on the net.

I believe if its a TPI it has cone filter in the front part of the engine compartment and if its TBI it has a circle air cleaner on top of the engine like a car with a carb.

Well then, its not TPI or TBI is it lol.

Would this make it one of those 305HO's? (Remember, I really don't know much about these engines/cars after 81).

I suppose so, I'm still in the learning process myself, I don't have a pic of the engine, but here's the bird.

So you got either a 305 HO or just a 305 4bbl with a after market holley on it. This means your computer probably is eliminated and you have a HEI distributor. Nice looking car

I would take it in to get looked at if it pulls when you brake. It might be a clogged brake line on the right.

yeah, I need to get it looked at, I haven't been driving it due to my suspended licsense........but it'll give me time to fix all my car's problems. (engine mount is broken too) If I hit the gas too hard, I can feel the engine CLUNK! last thing I need is the engine to drop out.....
