Well I'm going to take a guess here and throw out that you want to make a 1968 Firebird perform right with a 2002 Trans Am with an LS1 and 6-speed right?
Anyway I think you can order a new T56 for around $2000.
You might need an adapter plate depending on the tranny year and engine type.
There are a few considerations though:
1) How much time are you planning on spending above 140mph?
oif so are you sure you want to take a 1968 Firebird to that speed because even at 135mph my car is scary at those speeds.
2) If you keep the Pontiac engine there is a lot more torque then other engines (LS1 etc.) because of their design. So they are more like a viper with endless torque and less need to always be in the right gear.
3) If you plan to do track racing you'll probably only need a 5 speed anyway.
4) 1/4 Racing you only should be using the first 4 gears anyway, use the 5th as OD to drive home with your 4.56 gears.
A 5-speed is cheaper too.
Back to the point, your 6 speed you'll probably want is a Tremec T56, and and adapter plate. Not to mention a lot of work to install it under your car, especially if your car is an auto like mine. (Crazy amount of work to install a standard).

You can find an entire LS1 and tranny for $4500 if you look hard enough...
