As you may have know I have just bought my 1995 240sx last week with around 92k miles. I'm trying to decide whether I want to keep it or sell it for profit. I love the car, it has great handling and a good amount of acceleration, but I've noticed some problems with my car. First of all, there's a weird whistling noise under my car. I think I hear it under the drivers side, not sure But it's pretty loud, but only happens sometimes not all the time. Also it was a rental car for 27k miles, and you all know rental cars people beat em up and put in cheap gas in it. One more major thing is the overdrive, the button is messed up or something and it'll flicker on and off. I can feel the car move too when the overdrive inadvertently turns off. Does anyone know if the overdrive thing messes up your engine?? I had a mechanic who is very experienced (30+ working with cars) and he said the engine is fine and everything, and the car is in good shape, but I'm still not sure. Maybe it will cause an unforeseen trouble. But I've already had two mechanics say the engine is in good shape. Right now I have to spend $600 on maintenance repairs (90k costs a lot) so i'm not sure if i should sell it or what. What do you guys think?

keep it, just have someone fix the overdrive thing, it can't be good on the engine, it will eventually run it down if it keep down shifting while on the highway or whatever sounds like a great car except for that little problem

I thought you had a 5mt? Either way, almost any older car with close to 100K miles you buy is going to have a few problems.

yeah but the overdrive seems like it could be a big problem, I don't want the engine messing up on me, i want this to last around 200k-300k. BTW the whistling sound is nothing i found out, i talked to a car expert and he just said it was the rotors and brake pads, which I am going to replace soon.

Did you get it checked out? What did they say? Mine does the same thing. I'm thinking its the tailshaft bearing, but I'm not sure.

1.) Mines a MT
2.) There's no way in hell I'm going to waste my time or money to put an sr20 in my car
3.) This damn car has less than 66K miles and acts like it has about 166K. I have less problems with my rx-7s then this nissan.

nissans suck huge cocks
my fatsback that i sold had LEAKES EVERYWHERE, even the sunroof
my new convertible whistles too ( although my brakes do too, but thats cuz of the pads of course)
my engine is the one that whistle, past around 4500RPM or so

no dayna i got an automatic w/ overdrive, I wanted a manual before but when i saw this car and it was at a great price, I had to get it. 240sx's are now pretty hard to find for sale now, so this one was a steal. Yeah the whistling noise is nothing, going to get the pads replaced. The OD though is just what's making me have doubts, but since the mechanic said the engine is fine (he inspected it thoroughtly) and had no leaks I guess the overdrive doesn't mess up your car. Also my sister and mom never really pay attention to the overdrive (or the road for that matter), so a lot of times they'll drive it always on or they'll go on the highway with it off, and the maxima seems to still be solid at 112k miles. BTW i'm not letting em touch my new 240sx, they mauled my previous car, but I don't care since it's a crappy Civic.

hmm, I think i'm just going to leave the overdrive thing off, I heard that can't hurt your engine even if you go over 40 mph, but it can hurt your engine if you have it on under 40 mph. The damn thing still is hard to turn off after it's been activated. Hopefully a mechanic will be able to fix it :banghead:

actuallyt ita the other way around man, over drive is like using the 4th gear (auto's have 4 gears), so its only useful to turn it off so the engine can use the engine braking, (higher rpms in 3rd gear)
it dosent really matter when its on or off at low speed like under 30, but if the you are going a speed where 4th gear could be used, and your thing is off, you would be running in 3rd at higher rpms, losing gas mileage and i guess putting more stress on the engine
so with your overdrive off, your car has only 3 gears to go about
my overdrive is always on
i HATE AUTOMATICS!!
ANYONE KNOW OF ANY BLACK FATSBACKS FOR SALE\?

so u r suggesting I leave the overdrive always on for less damage to the engine? I don't think it shifts it to 4th, just b/c when u accelerate from a complete stop it with overdrive on it would accelerate very slooowwwllly if it was on 4th gear

automatics have gears too, they shift, imagine driving a stick car, ( have u before?), and all u had was 3 gears to work with, thats what over drive off does, it does not start in 4th, but it lets the car use a 4th gear
lemme know if i aint clear

yeah i've driven a stick-shift before (not very well) but I know all about the gears and shifting. Alright, h/o i'm confused about the whole overdrive thing. When overdrive is off, the button is not pushed in, and when it is pushed in the overdrive is on then right?
Also with overdrive I don't think it shifts at all, I think it just uses less gas to help you with gas mileage. I could be wrong though.

i know that automatic has gears it must shift just like manual-stick shift, except they automatically do it, but I don't think the OD being turned on shifts it to fourth gear. When overdrive is turned on, what you're saying is that it'll be in fourth gear then, and fourth gear will not accelerate fast from a complete stop. It'll accelerate slower than a Geo Metro, so that's why I don't think overdrive shifts to 4th gear. Try it, the 240sx will still accelerate fast from a complete stop even if you have overdrive on.

ehh, how can i explain this to u
OD is giving ACCESS to the car to use the 4th gear, not MAKING it be used, but ALLOWING IT to be used IF NEED BE

oh ok well i didn't know u meant it like that. But why have a button then, why not just include automatic overdrive without the button?? My friend's car has that, where it'll just do it itself. why wouldn't the 240sx have the same? this od button is drivin me nutz, today i kept struggling to try turnin the damn thing off when i was at a stop light.

eh, nissans are reliable enough and the 240sx is a fun car to drive. And damn, your cavalier has 261k miles on it??? I thought American cars died way before it gets that high. and it's only a 98 too, how much do you drive everyday??
