SAN DIEGO (Oct. 1) - A sabotage campaign by the nation's most radical environmental group has moved from the countryside to the doorstep of the nation's biggest cities.
The Earth Liberation Front, a movement that originated in the forests of the Pacific Northwest, has claimed responsibility for a string of arsons in the suburbs of Los Angeles, Detroit, San Diego and Philadelphia in the past 12 months. No one has been charged in any of the attacks.
The attacks, which included the costliest act of environmental sabotage in U.S. history, have targeted luxury homes and SUVs, the suburban status symbols that some environmentalists regard as despoilers of the Earth.
''Their actions used to be aimed at 'out in the country' industries,'' said Ron Arnold of the Bellevue, Wash.-based Center for the Defense of Free Enterprise, who has written several books criticizing the environmental movement's radical wing. ''Now they're are moving from a save-the-wilderness focus to an anti-capitalist focus.''
This summer, environmentalists in Southern California turned six-figure luxury homes under construction into charred sticks of wood, destroyed an unfinished 206-unit apartment complex and firebombed brand-new Hummers, the mammoth sport-utility vehicles that start at $50,000.
Rod Coronado, a legendary figure in the underground movement who is serving as an ELF spokesman and has drawn scrutiny from the FBI, said the group is being transformed by a new generation of activists.
''When I got involved in the mid-'80s, tree-spiking'' - pounding spikes into trees to prevent loggers with chainsaws from cutting them down - ''was a big deal,'' said Coronado, 37, who played a part in sinking two whaling ships in Iceland served time in prison an arson attack at a Michigan State University animal-research lab. ''What that's morphed into is a more urban environmental movement, whereby people are fighting for the last wild places in urban areas.''
He said the young activists are ''doing the only thing they know to do and that is strike a match and draw a whole lot of attention to their dissatisfaction with protecting the environment.''
The ELF is the FBI's No. 1 domestic terrorism priority. The organization has done more than $100 million damage - but caused no deaths - since it split off from the radical environmental group Earth First! and surfaced in the United States five years ago.
"Everybody in the city, everybody in the county, everybody in the country pays in some small way for the damage created by these maniacs.''"
-Russ Valone, California Building Industry Association
The ELF first took aim at urban sprawl in 2000, when it burned luxury homes and condos under construction on New York's Long Island. But Phil Celestini, the agent in charge of the FBI's domestic terrorism operations unit in Washington, noted that the San Diego fires ''are taking places in more densely populated areas than in the past.''
On Aug. 1, a fire destroyed a five-story, 206-unit apartment complex under construction in San Diego's University City neighborhood.
The damage estimate of $50 million made it ''the single largest act of property destruction ever committed by one of these groups in the history of the country,'' Celestini said. ''It's sheer dumb luck and providence that someone has not been killed. You set a fire that big, there's no way of predicting what the ultimate consequences will be.''
In the wake of the attacks, other San Diego developers have installed security cameras and hire guards to keep an eye on properties around the clock, said Russ Valone, of the California Building Industry Association, which has offered a $25,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the apartment complex arson.
''Let me tell you who the other victims of this are: You and me,'' Valone said. ''Our insurance pays a price. The more claims an insurance company put out, the more they more they have to raise their premiums. So, everybody in the city, everybody in the county, everybody in the country pays in some small way for the damage created by these maniacs.''
Guidelines posted on the ELF's Web site stress the need to take ''all necessary precautions against harming life.'' But the group's message has been mixed.
In a communique issued after a U.S. Forest Service research center in Pennsylvania was attacked last year, the ELF said: ''While innocent life will never be harmed in any action we undertake, where it is necessary, we will no longer hesitate to pick up the gun to implement justice.''
The ELF operates in a series of anonymous cells and uses the Internet to communicate and broadcast its message. But it has little organization, no fees and no membership list, frustrating FBI efforts to penetrate the group.
The recent case of an Oregon college student serving time in prison for a firebombing in 2001 opened a window into the ELF.
Jacob Sherman, a student at Portland State University, said he fell under the spell of Michael J. Scarpitti, known as Tre Arrow, a forest activist who is now the FBI's most-wanted ''eco-terrorist.''
According to court documents, Arrow ''groomed'' Sherman and slowly introduced him to radical protesting. Sherman stopped bathing, refused to wear shoes and began eating a strict vegan diet to imitate Arrow.
Sherman was no James Bond of the forest: His father called the FBI after his son drove home reeking of gasoline the night three logging company trucks were attacked. Sherman, 19 at the time, also blabbed to his girlfriend, who in turn told her father, a deputy state fire marshal, said Sherman's attorney, Andy Bates.
Authorities say Scarpitti, 29, has ties to California, Pennsylvania, Florida, Colorado, Ohio and Oregon. He is a suspect in at least one arson outside Oregon - the fire at the Forest Service research center in Pennsylvania.
In the San Diego attacks, the FBI has focused on Coronado, the ELF's self-described spokesman. Search warrants obtained by The Associated Press show FBI agents raided the homes of two local activists in a search for videotaped copies of a speech Coronado delivered in San Diego on Aug. 1 - the same day of the $50 million apartment arson.
Coronado has said he had nothing to do with the fire.
Mainstream environmental groups have taken pains to distance themselves from the ELF.
''The ELF are not environmentalists. They are arsonists,'' said Carl Pope, head of the Sierra Club.
However, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, whose members stormed a Victoria's Secret runway show last year, donated $1,500 to the ELF in 2001, according to the group's tax returns.
PETA said the money was used to send two people to Washington to testify at a congressional hearing on behalf of an ELF spokesman. PETA said the spokesman was being harassed by the FBI for speaking his mind.
What the #$&% they need to find these elf bastards and shoot them in the face with a sawed off shot Gun, whats gona stop them from going after other cars, just not SUV`s, they need to find these people and end there stupid acts, what if they kill some one, or burn down alot of house's and other buildings...this makes me very mad that there getting away with this.

Although I won't shed a tear for SUVs (which are an idicator of how stupid/selfish so many people are these days) I will say that these idiots need to think of real solutions, rather believing that somehow vandalism is going to get their point across.
What they are doing is in no way helping them solve any problems, and in the end they are only hurting their cause.

Yea I hate these fucking E.L.F. people. They piss me off. But I find it so funny that their really causing more problems to the environment than they are stopping. I mean how stupid can you be. The government needs to track down these people, lock em up and throw away the key. Theres people who hate SUV's but deal with them, and then there is these assholes. Oh well sooner or later it will all catch up to them and they'll try to blow something up and end up killing themselves. But they need to stop before they injure or kill any normal citizens.

wow...i've now found a group that pisses me off more than the PETA...and i thought that nothing else could be worse well maybe the kkk, but other than that damn....i mean i don't really like suvs, but what's to stop them from going after normal homes and other passenger cars? hell if i ever caught one burning my baby(corolla)..i'd beat the punk senseless with my sledgehammer....

SUVs are the greatest thing since sliced bread. Not only are they fully functional, but they also get people pissed off for just owning them. That in itself is a reason to buy one.
The ELF is populated by criminals from top to bottom. For some reason they think destroying something will prevent it from being built.
If any of you ELF fuckers read this, I'm going to dump a few gallons of Ortho on some bushes in one of our state parks. Should kill them off and poison the soil nicely. I find it also pisses people off to meet stupidity by doing something nearly as stupid.

:comprage1 They have no right! They're going to end up hurting someone. If someone wants to throw their money out on a huge house or SUV, then that's their choice. What they're doing is illegal and they should be dealt with for doing it, be it by prision time or a savage beating with a blunt object. If you don't like SUVs, complain to your senator about it. Don't go vandalize people's shit! They paid for it. I'd like to catch some of these ELF fuckers out. :chair: Stupid Hippie Terrorists :twak:

What doesn't make sense is that they do things that hurt the environment. Burning plastic and gasoline from a hummer lit up like a tiki torch, gee that makes are air healthier. Putting spikes in trees, dont those dumb bastards know that nailing shit in a tree kills it. Fucking dolts..

Yeah – the things that groups like the ELF and PITA do really can get under your skin. Everything from the burning Hummers to spray-painting fur coats that people are wearing is just way out of hand. You’ll also see that the acts directed on a person (like the spray painting) are done to old ladies or ones in high heels. Someone tries that with my wife and she’ll run their ass down and rip their balls off (unless of course its a woman then they'll have a shoe to pull out of a specific location).

Thats some really stupid crap. Me i'm not a fan of SUVs at all. Yet no time i have even thought to just burn them for no reason other then there "evil" sure they block my line of sight get bad gas milage but oh well my cars really low and gets great gas milage my win there loss is how to look at it. Plus its teh freedom what we we have lets us drive what we want wear what we want and these so called rights groups are going to get them taken away by abusing our freedom of speech by acting like asses. You want SUVs off the road prove there a danger they'd be off no more fur coats prove that the mink is nearly extint dont abuse those whos views differ no matter how dumb they might seem to you.

1. It's utterly hypocritical to put the fumes from a burning SUV into the atmosphere while claiming to be an environmentalist. So, why not use a Louisville Slugger on those horribly designed reasons why I'm paying so much for gas?
2. I'm starting a new version of PETA:
People
Eating
Tasty
Animals
Ya'll are free to join.
3. I read "The ELF is the FBI's number one domestic terrorism priority." So, if the KKK or some neo-Nazis kill one of my black friends, it's OK, but God forbid someone destroy some symbols of mindless self-indulgence without harming a hair on anyone's body. I'm not defending these nutjobs, I'm just saying the FBI has much bigger fish to fry.
