Type R grill

I have a 99 Civic coupe. If I purchase a Type R grill for my car, can I just remove the painted peice from my stock grill and attach it to the Type R grill, or do I have to have the Type R grill painted to match the car?

painted. where are you buying it from and i'm just guessing that it's a type r syle grill and that it will come prepped and ready to be painted. Unless you have some custom painted ride, it could be done yourself. Most likely if you are getting the grill, you just take off your bumper, take the grill section off of that, put the new grill in, then put it all back on. oh and duh, make sure it's painted first. I've painted a grill, a front and rear lip with some stuff i have that anyone can get and it turned out alright.

or you could go the DIY way which some of us have done, it ain't all that hard and its cheaper and more self involved which you can appreciate later. There's quite a few threads about that.

Hmm, I DO need another DIY painting project. :p And I have actually considered getting a Type-R style grill for my Civic... What do you think David, CTR grill, or leave mine the way it is? Mine right now I have the black cross-member pieces paint color matched to my car. Looks very clean. :cool:

I have seen the DIY Type R grills but I have only found them for the 96-98 version. The instructions are here...http://www.torontocivics.com/articles/grille/grill.html. It sounds like it would be easier for the 96-98 Civic. The 99 grill's painted section comes off with like 10 little screws. According to that DIY post you have to cut the center section where the "H" emblem is away from the painted part. I have all the stuff here to it myself, just that it seems like it would be very diffucult to cut the center section outt and still leave the mounting points to connect it. Anyone with a 99+ Civic pull out the grill and you will see what I am talking about. At least mine isn't connected to the bumper right now which makes it easy to pop in and out. When you remove the painted section, you will see what you have left and how precise the cuts have to be so you'll have mounting points for the bumper, and somewhere to attch the mesh. Take a look at yours and let me know what you think.

I did mine a while ago on my 98 and it took no less than an afternoon. The only problem was that i didn't cut the plastic out smoothly and i also got some glue on the painted part that left a stain. I drilled two holes up in the sides on each part and zip-tied it, but of course that left no support in the middle which after a month or so left the mesh facing perfectly straight (the grill of course is slightly curved). A couple weeks ago or i bought a type r style grill cause mine was starting to look ghetto cause the mesh had scraped the paint, the was a glue stain, the mesh wasn't securely fastened, and painted it and it looks exactly like what i had before with my DIY.

I've seen your work, except this time if you mess up it's gonna show. His pic above looks nice enough on silver too. I don't know if i'd go with the Civic emblem there, but that is a nice personal touch. I did notice that the cross pieces on yours were painted to match but i didn't realize they were a different color stock wise. IMO it looks nice enough as it is, but it looks stock too. With a grill like that above and the type r style lip it should give it a clean agreesive look, just don't go with the eyelids too! I got em! they're mine! ha ha j/k bottom line:

See, if I went CTR grill I wouldn't DIY it, just DIY paint one that I'd buy. Since the parts I'd have to cut aren't straight like the lower section piece, it would be very hard to file things down and keep it looking good and smooth. For mine I'd either have to leave it as is (as you've seen it) or buy a CTR style grill, and then DIY paint it like I did my other one. I'd probably just slap my other blue "H" emblem I have here onto it for my own personal, but JDM looking touch. ;)

See with those 10 or so screws that hold the inner grill to the outer painted part I was hoping to use that as a way to sort of secure the whole mesh in. It is a lot of cutting though. I have cut out 2 temp pieces of mesh(gutter gaurd, as I am going straight ghetto for now, hey at least I'll have a template!) with just a pair of side biter pliers which doesn't give me to straight of a cut, but I got pretty close on the last one. I am going to try it when I find the tin snips we have here, and than hopefully I'll get a nice finished piece. I am just worried about cutting out the inner grill and than messing up some how and having to roll with no grill. I'm sure that I'll end up buying the CTR style grill, but I was hoping to go DIY cause why spend money on something I won't need in a few months, as I am waiting for the Cervini's 99 Civic kit to come out. What do you guys think about painting the mesh black? I think thats the way it is on the CTR, but I'm not sure. My Civic is black, so i think the black mesh will make for a sleek look. I'll also be throwing my H emblem on the hood, like the CTR.
