altezza tail light HELP!

I just bought a pair of altezza tail lights for my 01 civic sedan EX... and I easily installed the smaller light (the one what goes up with the trunk lid) but i'm having a difficult time removing the other stock light. (the bigger one). Is this because it is connected to the rear bumper? which means i'll have to remove the bumper if i want to change my stock to altezzas.. ? please help
