Brakes help!

hello, ok, i recently purchused a a 1970 olds 442, and we are in the process of bleed the brakes, (we changed some brake lines), now, we are getting good fluid flow, but once we close the screw, the brakes dont work! what are we doing wrong? we are pumping the breaks 3 times, holding the brake to the floor, opening the screw, aloowing the air to escape, and the brake fluid to flow, closing the screw and repeating. nothing we try is working! any suggestions? what are we doing wrong?

I could be totally in left field, but perhhaps your wheel cylinders need to be rebuilt...or honed.

Is there good pressure coming out of the bleeder valve when you open it under pressure? The brake fluid should squirt several inches as soon as the bleeder is opened. If it doesn't, check the master cylinder, brake booster (if you have one), and brake pedel linkage. Also make sure that you are doing this on level ground.

first off dont pump the brakes.slowly press the pedal down and hold it.or just open the bleeders and let them gravity bleed.if you still have a low pedal after you have bleed the brakes check the rear shoes if applicable to make sure they are adjusted correctly.if they are not adjusted out far enough the pedal has to travel further in order for them to engage
