Need help identifiying jdm b16a1 sensor!

:flash: Theres a sensor on the back of the b16 jdm next to the oil filter there are three sensors its not the knock sensor or the oil pressure sensor but the single sensor with two wires going in it with a rubber cover over it in the shape of a bell. Is it the radiator fan control sensor? Can you help?

I moved to the Honda tech forum, best place to get the right answer.

Its not the water temp sensor, I would say its the Oil Temp sensor.

I didnt say engine temperature I said radiator fan control switch turns radiator fan off and on.Thats what i think it might be but not sure. There is no such oil temp sensor on a b16a.Only oil pressure sensor,Vtec oil pressure sensor, and oil sensor idiot light(comes on instrument cluster red light)when out of oil.

ummm yeah ok.

B16a's have ONE: Oil temprature sensor.
ONE: Oil pressure sensor
ONE: Knock sensor
all located somewhere in the back of the block.
They also have
ONE: Coolant temprature sensor located in the end of the head.
ONE: Oil pressure sensor located in the VTEC solnoid
There also a 2nd sensor in the side of the head which is either a second oil or coolant temp sensor.

When ALL the sensor's are giving the right readings then the VTEC can engage.
If there is low oil pressure in the block the sensor sends a signal to the ECU which flashs the oil warning light. Same with the coolant temp sensor, it sends a signal to the ECU which then turns on and off the fan as needed and operates the temp guage in the dash.
If either of these sensors send an abnormal signal, e.g low oil presusre or over heating then the ECU will either sweitch off the engine, (on later ones) or enter limp home mod untill the engine is switched off and when switched back on recieves normal signals from all sensors.

Try to know what your talking about next time.

There is noooooooo oil temp sensor!!!!! Like i said before.I could list every sensor. Ive just wired up my whole car and it is the radiator fan control sensor switch. Oil sensors work off of pressure not temperature! There are two sensors for coolant temp one that the ECU reads and one that the temperature guage reads. The b16a has Vtec oil pressure sensor (head) and oil pressure sensor(next to oil filter). The vtec pressure sensor monitors oil pressure. The oil sensor next to the filter on the back of the block doesnt send any signal to the ecu.If you run out of oil the red light on the instrument cluster will come on.Disconnect the oil pressure sensor next to the oil filter with the engine running and your oil light on the instrument cluster will come on. You only know half of what your talking about.

Coolant temp sensors are nearly always located in the head, most commonly by the out let to the radiator.
I dont know what all the sensors are, but I do know that across the back of the block is the Knock sensor and oil temp and pressure sensors. I know what im talking about here becuase Iv seen the diagram on the Japanese parts CD, and the discribtion of each part. (I was looking for a new knock sensor, and the part numbers had to be taken from the Parts diagram and chacked on another program to see exactly what they were) (I also have a JDM SiR sitting the driveway)

The Two sensors in the head would be the ECU temp sensor and the radiator fan temp sensor your talking about.

Now if you dont want any advice (and im begining to wonder here) why did you ask the question in the first place?

The head has the following sensors
Vtec oil pressure sensor-green plug
Vtec solenoid -single wire going to vtec solenoid
engine temperature sensor-one plug 2 wires red and green, temp sensor is black.
engine temperature gauge sensor-single wire white green stripe, small one prong sensor next to ETC.
All are located in about the same area. THERE IS NO OIL TEMP SENSOR
my engine is JDM.

Then why is there one on the Parts CD? Iv seen the diagrams, its there.
There would also be little point putting a 3rd sensor in the block for the Rad fan when there are already two in the head. I think you'll find the engine temp sensor is what is used to trigger the rad fan, either via a relay, or via the ECU.

The parts cd slipped up they could have easily mix up oil temp and engine temp. These mistakes are common. These sensors work off of very little voltage so they have to run individual sensors.Your right about the fan either the ecu or a relay. Im using a relay. And the PR3 ECU, it has a radiator fan pinout.

My fan is wired into the radiator fan control switch on the back of the block. So there is no way you are right,if i disconnect it my fan does not work.

The easy to find out of course is to just look where the sensor is pluged into the block, its not hard to tell if its into the water jacket or an Oil way.
(I would look on my car but the inlet manifold gets in the way)
But if I remember correctly there is an oil way that runs across the back of the block and all 3 sensors plug into it.
It is also possible that Honda uses oil temp in the block to operate the raidator fan, and maintian a more even engine temp.

Wow, this is an old thread.

You might have better luck starting a new thread in the honda sub forums.

But, to get you on your way, some of the early B16a's didn't have knock sensors.
