...between a first gen JDM b16 and a second gen, and also how do you know if it came out of the integra xsi or whatever car it supposedly came out of?

well its really easy to change valve covers but the 1st ge,n the vtec is small on it and the 2nd gen, the VTEC is big. if you really want detailed info about what it came out of, there are #'s below the engine code that you can look up. Also, if you are buying the full swap, the 1st gen is cable and the 2nd gen is hydroulic. If you need more info, just ask.

cool, thanks. my friend just bought a 91 teg w/ the swap and i was trying to figure out which engine he had, looks like he's got a 1st gen

AN easier way to tell is to check the three round seals on the head above the header. They all have numbers on them and the first seal is the year of production.

White plugs = 1st gen
Grey plugs = 2nd+
Also the thermostat housing is different, other than that you need to open it up, as too many tihngs on the outside (valve covers, and intake manifolds) can be changed.
