96 Tahoe Audio problems

My stock radio in my tahoe has the auto adjuster for speed... the faster you go the louder it gets to compensate for road noise, etc... well that feature started freaking out one day, it would get real quiet the blast the speakers then go out, adjusting itself.

eventually the stereo completely stopped sending a signal to the speakers... if i played with the power/volume knob it would blast thru a little then go out. the stereo itself seemed to be functioning fine, just no sound.

so today i replaced the stock stereo with a "temp" replacement jvc cd player... and with this i am getting the same thing... no audio.... the stereo works fine and it seems like it is sending the signal thru, but still i get no sound...

so, im not sure what the problem is here... anyone have any suggestions?
ive checked the fuses, but i will check a little more in depth tomorrow... any help would be appreciated

hey man i have 99 tahoe and i would only gues that either you hvae a really screwed up fuse that isnt working right or that you have some wires tayht have had their covering melted off and they are crossing shorting youre sound system out. as for the diagram i have no clue but if you are kinda close to your guy at a chevy dealership they might print you out one for free.

My 96 Yukon is having the same problem with the radio. It is either really loud or really low. I was wondering if you figured out the problem and could let me know. I was planning on replacing the radio.
thanks

From my understanding the factory amp is located under the drivers seat. It looks like a metal box, not really like what youd expect though!

My radio volume is still ging trouble. It is either very loud or quite. At times it will work properly. It seems as if there is a short in something. There is even static in the back speakers at times. I was wondering if anyone would know what the problem is and what could be done to fix it.
Thanks, Jon

well, i figured out the problem and it wasnt what i thought.... there was a short in one of my rear 4 x 10 speakers. I took the speaker out, and the whole system worked... havent had a problem since! check the small things jonhd21, it probably right under your nose (or behind your head in my case)

I fixed this problem Yesterday. I removed the 2 rear speaker and the radio all of a sudden worked fine. I found that the wires to one of the speakers were cut and reconnected. They were reconnected backwards. After swapping the 2 wires again It all worked fine. I recommend checking all your speaker wires for tampering and fix as needed.

the problem and story you are describing happened to me. I guess i will start looking for a short. hopefully it will be as easy to find as yours was.

I have the same problem. My stereo hardly ever plays. I noticed one day when I hit my turn signal, the stereo came on for a second, then quit. Sometimes when I hit my brake pedal it will also come on. I can fidget with the amp under the drivers seat and get some static and cracklin to come through the speakers. I wonder if the amp is bad...I have already tried another used factory radio. Maybe I'll check the rear speakers for the heck of it.
