hello everyone,
i was hoping that someone might be able to tell me where to find a turbo for a 1998 grand prix gt. i know that gm went with the supercharger route but if anyone could tell me of an aftermarket turbo or another car whose turbo would fit i'd appreciate it.
thanks,

There is no direct bolt on turbo for the Gen II grand prix. There is A TON of modification required to add one to the car. INTENSE racing is one of the few places that have done it. It can be seen at www.intense-racing.com It is NOT a cheap or easy conversion. Just stick with the supercharger ;)

thanks for the article. i hadn't seen that. yea i wasn't sure if there were any bolt on turbos. a local performence shop gave me a quote of about $4000 and i was just hoping to find something cheaper. i already have an electronic turbo on there but i want more power. right now i can go 100 mph at 3000 rpm...not too bad for a $50 plastic turbo....

my dad actually got mine for me off of ebay. but you can get them cheaper from a marine/boat shop for about $50. it's just a fan used to blow gas fumes from a boat when it's idling, but it works fairly well, when you put it in you have two options you can have it directly blow into the throttle body and have it suck in air through a cone filter or you can have it in your driverside fender blowing into your air box. there are actual electronic turbos made for cars that you can get from
http://www.electricsupercharger.com/
i don't have any experience with these personally but i was looking into it before my dad gave me the marine blower. you can get a marine blower from the following website:
http://www.iboats.com/mall/index.cgi?cart_id=957548280&keywords=blower
it's worked well for me.
good luck,

you want to get the 12v 240cfm. i'm not sure exactly what you'll have to do to get it to fit your cone. my turbo blows into my air box with a square K&N. i had to modify the air box (i.e. cut it) to get the turbo to fit. i expect you might have to modify your tubing or ad tubing. the version with a cone filter i saw had steal tubing or piping from both ends of the turbo to the throttle body and the cone. i'll try to get you a pic of my car in the next day or so. it's pretty quiet you just hear a humm when you turn it on...if you want to make your car louder the best way to do that is get louder mufflers....if you want better shifts i recomend the thrasher shift kit. it's awesome.

That would be a Blow-off valve (BOV) making that noise...and you can only produce that sound if you actually have a REAL turbo. :screwy: :iceslolan You need real pressurized air in a closed loop to make the BOV sound when you return to a vacuum state due to shifting or letting off the gas. :naughty:

Turbo kit for 97+ GP GT's very soon according to that thread. I would keep my eye on that.
Or,
http://www.zzperformance.com/zzp/products/csc/centrifugal_sc_kit.htm
I would save your money on that fan, maybe while waiting on the release of the turbo you should throw some rockers on. What other mods do you have done to the car??

well i tried to take pictures of my turbo but it didn't work so well because the turbo is actually in the finder and you have to peek between the airbox and the finder to see it. again here is a link to where it can be bought:
http://www.iboats.com/mall/index.cgi?store_id=100&prod_id=3184&cart_id=402383782¤t_category=blower
i have seen a picture of a set up like yours with an electronic turbo in it but i can't remember where.....if i find the pic or the site i'll post it.
real turbo's and centerfugal superchargers are very expensive. that is why i asked my question if there were any cheap compatable turbo's for the GP. you can convert your GT to a GTP relatively cheaply by getting the parts from ebay or a pull-a-part, which i am thinking about doing when i have the money....but a cheap turbo would be preferable.

This is incorrect. There are many more differences between the L36 (N/A 3800) and the L67 (Supercharged 3800), besides the blower. The L67 has much stronger internals as it must withstand the force of the blower. The PCM is different. The throttle body is different. The transmission the L67 uses is much stronger. The list goes on. You're better off swapping the whole motor and transmission into your car.
Check out this site. It will give you more info.

no doubt there is a lot of work and parts to replace but it' is cheaper than a turbo or centerfugal supercharger....a supercharged engine including the pcm goes for about $850 on ebay. a wiring harness is around $10-$20. i'm not sure about the transmission. i have seen a 1990 3.1 ltr turbo engine and transmission for $900. the cf superchargers and turbo kit's i have seen are $4000-$5000.

thanks

Qball, first of all..ulness you do some headwork or atleast change your rockers...DO NOT GET HEADERS. It will be a waste of your money. I'd also recommend a DHP PCM before applying the headers. Second of all, it's my opinion that these electric turbos are a waste of money. But hey...do what you wanna do I guess. :screwy: As far as installing the hair-dryer....I mean electric turbo, it just goes in your intake between your airbox and throttle body. Not that difficult to figure out really. :disappoin

People...please do not buy these 240cfm? the only thing that would help is a lawn mower or maybe out flow a geo metro engine...on your grand prix i'm figrurin 3800 its gonna slow down the airflow if anything..so dont waste ur money :screwy:

yes, the normal draw of the engine is above 250cfm as you go past idle, but it is making the engine do less work to draw that air in. it's simple physics that matter moves as a sum of the net forces. it doesn't slow it down at all that i've noticed. if you look at the turbo, you can see that air could flow through it easily even if it wasn't running, and the turbine spins freely. i even leave mine off at lower speeds. if you would rather spend your money one something else, be my guest but i can only tell you what my experience with it has been. i have gotten better results in my 40-60mph acceleration, and i can go 105mph at 3000 rpm before my speedlimiter kicks in. i also get better mpg.

We tested many and found that there are only 2 that work, one we sell, one we don't. Basically what it comes down to is that "yes the majority of them are junk". You can pay a price range of $14-$250 for what you can pick up at any boating supply store.
Find out about Manufacturers Warranty, if theres none then it's junk!
Find out what the fans are made of, if it's plastic then it's junk!
Now I'm sure by now you want to know what we found that actually works
1) the electric turbo 800cfm (not 250cfm like what you find on ebay) yes this is the one we carry
check it out at www.cargodzcc.com
2) the Thomas Knight Turbo actually an electric supercharger made for quick boost (we don't carry it because we think it cost to much $1995.00 and you still have to buy more stuff to run it)
check it out at www.boosthead.com
