Blazer as tow vehicle

Does anyone have experience using a Blazer as a tow vehicle? GM advises against this, but I've heard that it may be possible in some instances. Am interested in both 2WD and 4WD issues, as wells as manual vs. automatic transmission issues. Thanks.

I hope you mean using a Blazer to tow trailer/boat/ whatever.
Here's what the owner's manual of my '02 SBlazer Xtreme says:
2 wheel drive, 2 door, auto, w/3.42 axle - 5700lbs max trailer weight
2 wheel drive, 2 door, Xtreme, auto, w/3.42 - 2000lbs max
2 wheel drive, 2 door, manual trans, w/3.42 - 4200lbs max
2 wheel drive, 2 door, Xtreme, manual trans w/3.42, - 2000lbs max
2 wheel drive, 4 door, auto, w/3.42 - 5500lbs max
4 wheel drive, 2 door, auto, w/3.42 - 5400lbs max, w/3.73 - 5400 max
4 wheel drive, 2 door, manual, 3.42 - 3900lbs max
ZR2 ------------------------ 3.73 - 4600lbs max
4 wheel drive, 4 door, manual trans w/3.43 - 3600lbs max
"The max trailer weight assumes drive and one passenger and the vehicle has all required trailering equipment."
Even my 02 Blazer Xtreme came with a factory hitch receiver and wiring harness.
I'm scratching my head as to why the Xtreme has such a low tow rating being it is basically the same powertrain.
hope this helps.

I reg tow a 16 foot fiberglass boat around 1500 lbs on the freeway 70 to 75mph no problems.
use to tow utility trailer shor distance with1 ton rock or dirt no problem
have towed car dolly 1992 buik regal freway 70mph no problem
have towed 1996 town and country van 8 miles on car dolly took it easy no problem
the bigest problem are trailers that do not have brakes and relying on the vehicles brakes and the short wheelbase
I was amazed that this actually has better towing power than my full size ford f150 with a 302 ever had

Thanks for your responses. But I actually want to tow the Blazer behind a motorhome (also known and dinghy towing) and am interested in issues dealing with whether a 2000 or newer Blazer with an AT can be towed without modifications to the transmission. Also, if a 4WD Blazer with AT can be towed without problems.

the low tow rating on the extremes are from ground clearance

If you tow your Blazer with Auto tranny, you are going to be turning your drive shaft which turns your tranny gears, but your engine isn't running to cool the tranny fluid, so you'll over heat your tranny causeing damage... in other words, not good, unhook your drive shaft... ;) other choices would help, hehe

If you have a 4 wheel drive with electronic transfer case it can be put in neutral to be towed behind a camper.(The transfer case can be put in neutral)

How do you put an electronic transfer case in neutral? I to want to tow a 2000 behind my camper.

I have a 2000 LT. Do you have a owners manuel? It explains the way to do it in there. If you don;t have a manuel you can download one in PDF format from www. mygmlink.com
