Redlining

I have a 96 GSR, with about 108,000. The engine looks good, and sounds good and i got new radiotor, new water pump and timing belt/acesory belts and do regular maintenance(3,000 mile). I always hear redlining is bad for your engine, which makes sense, and so is driving 45mph in 5th. Is it just as hard on your engine redlining it in 1st as it is in 2nd, or 3rd, or any gear for that matter? Seeing as how its such a wonderful sound, I can't help it. How many times a week, should I try and keep it down to, so that I don't blow my engine or anything harmful? I hope I don't sound too ignorant, but everybody has different experiences, so Im trying to see what the majority opinion is about this.

essentially never redline your car when there is no load on the car. If you really want to stretch your rod bearings n bolts then be my guest but other than that its okay to accelerate to redline once in a while just not at everychance you get. And by no load I mean that the car is not in gear. There is no point to doing it other than to be ignorant and break stuff (but it does sound cool ill admit that). Just drivng and shifting at redline wont kill your car. When you race or are trying to accelerate as quick as possible then shift more towards redline If I had a gsr and was going all out id probably shift around 8,200rpm (just my 2 cents so dont take my word for what you should do- every car and driver is different)

yeah, don't redline in neutral. I don't think it is SUPER bad to redline, just don't keep it up there and dont drive at like 5000rpm just holding it there. I heard redlining cleans carbon deposits off your valves though :icon16:

Is it bad to bring my 98 ls up to about 6000 rpm in neutral??? :uhoh:

O and at what rpm would my 98 ls wun accell no more??? i always shift at around 6800 rpm...

well Im not sure about the later integra non vetecs but in my 92 teg I can shift at 7300 no problem and I believe the revlimiter is around 7500
however do not test where the revlimiter is when its not in gear because the engine can go to a higher rpm than the revlimiter on its momentum (plus its just bad for it)
when accelerating try shifting at around 7000-7300 (my advice)

 OO driving in 5th gear at around 45 mph is bad for the car???...i think i usually use 5th gear at about 50 mph or so is dat bad

I've heard its better to overwind it than underwind it, in other words if your not sure what gear you should be in go to the lower gear. Some one told me its just as bad to drive in 1st gear at 7k as it is to drive in 5th gear at 1k. Thats just what I was told. Seeing as how we have so little torque, I can see how it'd be difficult to get a 2500 lbs car to go in very low RPMs.

The basic rule is a gear for every 10 mph, so 50 in 5th wouldnt be too bad, except never cruise in 1st, I go from near dead stops a lot while in 2nd, but my car at 45 in 5th doesnt have a healthy sound, and a school bus could probably out accelerate me.

On my Ls i usually shift at 3-3.5 rpm on my normal driving and those are good time to shift rite???

well it depends on how fast you want to accelerate and you will know when to shift at what rpm and mph the more you drive and become familiar with your car. around 3500 and above is normal.
and I agree 45 and 5th gear = whoa holy high gearing batman we need to down shift or the joker will get away in his school bus for sure :iceslolan

I have a '92 gsr and i just can't help reving it right up sometimes. I don't know how someone could just cruise around in there 'teg and keep it under 5k because quite frankly at commuter speeds in my morning commute i get over that in 5th gear. If i am accelerating it depends on the situation, but normally i shift around 6,000. If there is a lane merge and an asshole to the side of me, well then i shift at 8,000.:)

Well I have some modifications to it, not too big a deal, but from 1 to 3k rpm it sounds normal, not too loud, but after that it sounds loud and just by the sound people think Im like racing them. Its weird because after like 3500 rpm, I can't hear the exhaust, and all the noise is coming from the engine(vtec 5.xK rpm and up) and the intake(6k and up), buts still hella loud. I love it. I don't really like the attention it draws. You never know when a cop might be around.

i drove a lexus is300 the other day and all i can say is damn. it has like 2x as high gearing as our tegs. going 45mph in 2nd gear you are at like 2800rpm, in my car im 48mph @ 3000rpm in 4th. and it still has sooo much acceleration in the IS300, you get up to speed so fast so easily.

You guys sound like a bunch of F&F wannabe's. No offence but what are you guys talking about? The reason it's called the redline is because it's not good. You guys can't possibly take it into the red anyways. That's why Honda and most other automotive companies have rev-limiters. Unless you have a chipped ECU you are not even in the red. The only motor I know of that was made to ocassionally hit the red is a rotary and seeing as we all have piston motors we should never see it. I have a chipped ECU and my valvetrain is not built yet so when I push it I constantly watch the tach as not to float valves. Oh and the whole 45mph at 5th thing, the only reason you guys say that is because you guys probably have LS's. Drive the short gear ratios of a DOHC VTEC high rev engine and tranny and you'll think differently.

indeed.
i cruise at 50 in 5th at around 24-2500 rpm...
the ls has MUCH longer gears than any DOHC VTEC motor that i know about.

Ask before you assume and bring all your technical shit here. No one's impressed. And if you were referring to me as one of the F&F wannabes, explain to me how.

Look n00b, if you can't take constructive criticism then stay out of forums all together. The fact that you take your shit to the redline for the simple sound makes you F&F. Taking your shit to the redline for the excitement and staying within powerband is what it's all about, not to sound kool. You guys talkin about redline is rediculous. Why the hell would I want to impress a bunch of n00bs on the net. I was simply trying to enlighten you obvious beginners. If I want to impress you I'd hand you and your GSR your ass on the street. Take what I said, wipe your tears, and learn from it. Crybaby.

There you go trying to impress everyone. Wouldn't F&F be body kits, underground neons, big wings, wild paint, and all that stuff? I like the sound, you don't? And don't act like other people don't either, that nice sound as the VTEC kicks in, and I'm glad I have it. Just because you don't like the sound(I'm guessing since you bitched about it), doesn't mean nobody else does or should. I think its funny, you hypocrite. Don't call me a cry baby, look how offended you got. Also, don't be too proud if you can beat me, (you probably could). What it comes down too, is who has the most money. Don't worry though, I actually laughed at your post, I didn't cry. :disappoin

I did'nt say I did'nt like the sound of VTEC. I love the sound but reving that high just for the sound is rice. You're probably one of those guys that rev at other Honda's going the other way. My sig, it's a quote from Initial D.

That's dumb reving on people like that, I agree(so no, I dont do that). I get mad, its like they want me to jump the divider or something. I just smile and kinda laugh. Besides, here's the thing, I never said anything about reving that high, i get mad when I leave my car running with people in there and they rev it. I just like feeling the power and the sound of going through the gears and hitting just a little under redline. But if doing that a little too much, not all the time, is really bad for my engine, then I'll only save it for when I actually need it. I plan on upgrading all the internals eventually, but I'd rather do it when I'm ready and not when I have too. You know what I mean? :icon16:

honestly, it doesn't sound like b16 is saying the fact that u drive ur car hard ever is retarded, more like unessecary rev'n up to red-line an ish all the time like that is pointless is all (an pretty ricey).
i'll be the first to admit i drive my car hard, but to jus drive around to hear vtec over an over IS straight outta the fast an the rediculous, an is wut gives honda drivers a bad name.
but one correction b16, u CAN take it into the red w/ a down-shift. yes' u'll prolly blow something, but stil...
i do agree on one last thing tho...LIGHTEN UP. its jus b16, he's blunt, get used to it.

Like I said, I don't do it all the time, I'm not stupid or ricey(once again), and never when anyones around, especially since there are always cops around my area. I dont have bling bling rims, no wing, no crazy ass body kit. I just like to feel my cars power ONCE in AWHILE, mainly since I'm always adding stuff and I dont have a dyno, I really dont see anything ricey about that. Anyways, I wont get all defensive anymore, just dont call me ricey without merit and dont act like you know me either :smokin: . I've never had any encouters with B16, but I'd rather be able to get help from him than keep fighting, so how bout we drop it. :lol2:

Also KrNx, I noticed you have a VTEC controller, what kind, and would you recommend it? Has it helped you noticably?
B16EJ1
10-06-2003, 02:02 AM
Get a VAFC but unless you get a reprogrammed ecu or aftermarket cams, changing the cross-over is useless. There's actually a hp dip at a lower cross-over seeing as VTEC was made for high rpms. I used the VAFC to tune the air fuel ratio because the ECU I have was programmed with an aggresive fuel map and the VTEC was pushed forward.

Thanks, thats what I was looking at. The 1st gen for now. Hondata seems a little too much for me. Some guy told me to lower it to 4400, he also put an 89 engine into his 90 CRX, poor guy, I guess I better not listen to him.

definately don't, i've messed around w/ it a bit (jus outta curiousity to see jus how MUCH slower i'd be), an i'd consistantly run about 1/2-3/4 of a car slower in a race than the time before...
the VTEC controller was actually installed on the car when i bought it (i certainly wouldn't purchase anything of the sort with the mod's done so far), an i leave it at 5200 rpm (sometimes move it up to 5900 if im cruising on the freeway/highway at high speeds, an wanna save gas).
hondata is worth the money, by far its my fav chip out now.
