Ok i'me new to posting here but i'me not ur average retarted newbie.....i do have massive spellin issues too so......yeah......
anyway....i picked up my s13 coupe for 2 grand its a 93, with an automatic non abs non hicas
i got 5,500 saved up, and the car remains stock, i wana do a sr20 swap...but a local shop called hybrid dynamics
www.hybridynamics.com
told me that it coulent be done for that because they wanted 1500 for labor...witch i see other places do it for 1000 and they want 250 for the 5-speed swap. and ruffley 3000 fora s13 black top + shippiing, and there not dealing in front clips so i need all the other stuff radiators and fuel pumps and FMIC's. running my bill to like 6000....witch includes nothing but the things needed to make the car run. i don't know were else to take my car in the pittsburgh, PA aera that does this sort of thing. i've even been considering a redtop for the cheaper price. i aksed him if i could find my own engine and have it shipped to them and me pay for it. he said thats an option but he scared me out of it by saing these engines are around 10 years old, there junked enginins from japan and i'de hate to see you buy somthing and get screwed over witha engine thats already blown. i was wondering what everyones thought and imput was on this situation. i need to do it for 5,500 but even then thats all i got and that means no boost controlers no downpipes no blow off valves nothing just stock sr20. i need to know if theres a cheaper alternative, i surley cant do it myself. oh yeah i called a guy at heavey throttle and he said that front clips are a huge rip-off and there kit says it costs $6200 dollars, am i retarted to think i can do this swap for $5000?? even if i can't get any extras i can add those later, this engine swap is gona cost me all that. i know you guys don't like me cause i'me a newbie, i know alot about these cars, i just don't think its somthing i could do myself. i've been reading up on this for about 6 months. i've read about every thread and i got the FAQ memorized. i've seen engines at places like suncoast cutoms and venus auto but how good are these engines are they working complete i need everything required to run the car, i can get the engine in the car for 5000, but it wont run i still need a radiator an intercoller a fuel pump ect. he told me the cost for the engines is high because latley there having trouble getting them thru customs. should i take the car elsewere to have the swap performed
http://www.unstable-hybrids.com/ use to swap engines now they no longer do it but they stated
S13 Silvia/180sx Redtop SR20DET
Engine from 1990-1993 S13 Silvia and 180sx, 2.0L Dual Overhead Cam Inline 4-cylinder Turbo Motor
Motorset: $2,500 * Motorset is not guaranteed to come with intercooler or piping.
Front Clip: $2,600 * Intercooler and piping included.
Installation: $1,700
so for 500 less than this place here not only is it runing but i have money leftover to put into performance mods. look i know you guys hate newbies but please help me out here, am i crazy to think 5000 isn't enuff to get a sr put into a 240sx and get it running?

i would say, find the engine for cheap, make sure its compression and leakdown tested, and that it has all the parts needed for the swap, except the rad and piping.
then get that stuff later. and have someone install it for u. hybrid dynamics seems to be ripping u off.
u say 6000 for a complete swap? here in canada its 6000, so that means u are definately getting ripped.

thats rediculous man, you can get full s13 clips for under 3k shipped ... don't let those idiots rip you off. If you have any mechanical knowledge whatsoever and have friends/family willing to help i would suggest doing it yourself. Its not that hard of a swap. You could have the motor in plus a good ammount of performance upgrades for 5500$ ...

You are definently getting ripped off. I ran across a web site called flashoptions.com and while i haven't dealt with them, they seem to be a reputable source of SR20 front clips and engines and others. That shop in your area is just running up the price and as for trying to get you to buy enines through them, anyone can buy a compression and leakdown tested engine if they look hard and for reputable companies. I'd suggest getting some buddies together and getting them to help you hoist the engine into your engine bay then its just connecting hoses and wires, don't forget to get uncut harness and ECU with the engine though. Good luck with your endeavour.

flashoptions is junk. i've heard from more then one person.
if you have the initiative and the right resources, the swap isn't that hard to do by yourself. my friend Mike dropped his black-top SR into his hatchback with just him and a few friends, with no prior mechanical experience. he had a little bit of help from his Nissan-knowledged friend, but that was about it. most of the hard labour was just him and his buddies.

and not to mention he had barely no use of power tools.
i believe it was all hand tools, as i have not whatched the ENTIRE dvd which he made.
look for it on ebay, its there. and its informative.

remember tho, its an automatic, and i need a 5 speed swap, i got exstesive tools but i duno if i got the confidance for all the work required also don't you need the main harness lenthend to goto the passenger side? i know i could get some people but i don't think its somthing i gota nuff confidance in to do myself ya kno?? i called heavy throttle and they told me that front clips are a huge rip off, but there "install kit" totals to 6100. ive looked at suncoast customs venus autos don't list a price ive herd there crap. how am i spost to trust Ebay, i dunno were to get it and on top of it were to get it done, my dad use to be a mechaic but he worked in the 70's and my father in law is a mecahic but he does mostley exause work, my best friend has a 82 monty that is a bird bath because he coulent put a 305 in it. thats prolly why im scared..i had nothing to do with it but still......i know nothing about carborators, but i know a good bit about these nissan's. i just need to think of a way to do this :banghead: theres a place in south carolina that use to do it called un-stable hybrids that does emm pretty cheap, but they don't do it no more acording to there site, i also considerd a CA18 swap, but the aftermarket suppot is bad there old engines... but on the pluss u can rev the hell out of them, and did i say CHEAP! loli want somthing reliable i don't wana do a KA-T.
also fo the 5-speed swap i need a cossmemeber to hold up the tranny hydrolic line and a master cylandar, but don't you need USDM gas brake and clutch petal assy. you can't use the JDM ones from the front clip right??? cause its right hand drive.
i'me just trying to go over whats required at least in my car.
thanks for all the help guys!

Garret,
a buddy of mine ran accross this thread and let me know about it. obviously we've had some miscommunications over the phone the couple of times we have spoken. i don't want you to think that i am ripping you off in any way shape or form. i know i've told you that we can get an SR swap in your car converted to a 5 speed for roughly 5000, and, as i've said, i guarantee my work, and can do absolutely everything in my power to guarantee the motor. i can tell you though, with the numerous swaps that we have done, i have yet to have any problems other than a bad harness on an S14 which we did, but the problem was corrected with a new harness, and the car runs flawlessly now.
i broke down some figures for you. as i told you my guy has the two motors right now, the red top that has the front mount which i am still trying to find out more info on for you, and the stock red top motorset for 2300 + shipping. the black tops that i told you about were running 2800 + shipping if you wanted to go with some thing with lower miles, but as i told you, since money is tight, i'd just go with the red top.
anyway, i broke it down like this. now, the grand total isn't 100%, since there are some other options we would need to discuss, such as what to do with the battery, blow off valve options, if you wanted to do a fuel pump now or later, but in theory, this is the bare minimum you would need in order to complete the swap, and spend your money the most effecient way.
red top swap- $2300
shipping - $300
install w/ converting to a 5-speed $1250
downpipe - $90-$220
greddy vspec intercooler kit - $759.99
blow off valve - $40-$300
total -- $4739.99 - $5129.99
i see no reason why it can't be done, and surely that seems to be a lot less than what heavy throttle is charging. the only thing that i could see adding to the price is if i can't locate the parts i need to make it a 5 speed for a cheap price.
also, as i've told you, you can get the motor on your own if you like, that is entirely up to you, but you even made the point about me not wanting to see you buy a junk motor off of an unreputable source. as i said, i only buy my motors off one of the most reputable SR sources on the market, and i can guarantee you that you will have a running motor when it leaves my shop.
hopefully i've cleared some things up and you can see that i'm not trying to "rip you off". if you got any more questions, feel free to call me, or anyone else on here for that matter.
thanks,
jason

that was some time ago jason,
i've since decided due to my situation you are defintley my best bet, the automatic screwed me over....i shoulda got difrent car.....but for 2 grand, all it needs is aloy's a paint job and a SR 5-speed. my misconseption came from the 5 speed swap, other places made it seem like a 500 dollar ordeal, anyway all the behind us as soon as u can get a clip in and get this done is as soon as i want it done, i don't care if you get used parts, parts are parts as long as they work...bu t 4800 out the door sounds pretty good to me! so as i have been i'll be in touch.....this thread is old
