Jerking from my Toyota

I have a 1985 toyota pickup. it has the 22r engine. I just bought a used 22r engine to put in it. The guy i bought the engine from said he just replaced the head gasket. when i got it in, the vehicle wouldnt crank. I turned the crank to tdc then looked at the distributer. the rotor was facing exactly opposite of the number 1 cylinder. which explain that. so i turned the crank one time to tdc again and the adjusted the rotor to number 1. now the engine cranks fine. I have replaced the distributer cap, rotor button, plugs, wires, battery. the truck idles fine, but when you are going about 35-45 and you go to accelerate a little, the vehicle feels like it jerks. it sounds like the engine is the one doing the jerking. it sounds like it cuts out for a sec and then comes right back in. It'll do that maybe once maybe twice in a row. could it be the camshaft is not timed right now? also when you accelerate to about 3 or 4,000 rpms in neutral and the let off, it backfires alot. could be because i have the cat. converter and muffler off(want to get new ones). Sorry i've taken up so much space. Thanks for any help any can give me. Also it is a 5 speed manual. Thanks
