Make sure you're getting a 500 and not a 472. Caddy used alot of 472s from 71-73 and they look identical. Check the emissions sticker or the casting numbers.
Bore is 4.304 and stroke is 4.3". Torque is huge, and HP is so-so. They can be very easily (and surprisingly inexpensively) made to push 500 ponies pretty easily with ported heads, intake and a cam. Edelbrock makes intakes for them that work very well. MTS is a great source as is Cadillac Motor Development, which I think is now just called CadCompany. Call both and get their tech manuals. They are cheap considering what you get. They stock headers, cams, complete engines, motor mounts for popular swaps, and all kinds of goodies. Keep in mind (and the manuals will go into more detail on this) but unless you are going to completely change the RPM range of the 500 (which starts getting expensive after 5500 rpms), you need to think backwards. Often time performance increases with higher gears so you can use the torque. With my near stock 500, my torque peaks at about 1700 rpms and power craps out by 4000. I spent big bux on a 14" convertor with sharp vanes from a commercial diesel application. It stalls at about 1450 for me and that is just right. My torque curve resembles a diesel in alot of ways.
They're light, too. My 500 weighed in at 585 with A/C and alternator... a full 130 lbs lighter than the 389 it replaced.
