Anyone run a thundermuff exhaust system?

Hey Guys, I'm finally breaking down and doing it right. I'm looking at getting a full catback since my stock system is starting to go. I drive a 93 Civic. I've been looking at the Airmass Thundermuff cat-backs. Built by Holley. They seem to be well built, and I like how they look. The only downside is that they have a huge 5" tip. Kinda ricey, but oh well. Anyhow I'm just wondering if anyone is running them. And if you are, how is your power band affected, do you notice and drops or increases? how is the noise level at interstate speed, and most of all how does it sound? Thanks!

yea 5zigen is where its at right darrell. In case u dont know darrell runs it on his integra, and i run it on my civic. sounds nice. personally i wouldnt get the thundermuff, cause i personally dont like it. i have seen it on one civic and i didnt like it. get an actual exhaust made by a company that specializes in imports not muscle cars, u might find nothing wrong with that, but i do!

kinda like puting a greddy turbo kit on your 75 mustang. get my drift

i used to work for pep boys....we installed a thundermuff cat back on a 98gsr.....its sounded really nice on that car....really hollow and deep toned. but it was big....i personaly have a 2.25 full exh with a ractive universale muff....its really nice. loud and low at idle....once u get over 4g it starts to quiet and u can then hear the intake(which i prefer to hear) over the exh....its a nice muff for freeway driving.

Now i've been off doing research and everyone is saying that a 5zigen fireball is one of the loudest muffs on the market. i mean i we talking mile away loud or what? I don't want that at all. (though i'd be fun :grinyes: ) so asides from the pet peeve of some of you about holley is it really that bad? I mean i'm looking for huge (cough... 5hp...cough...lol) power gains and sound level. Is it just that it has a 5" tip and says holley on the side? lemme kno... I don't have any peeps to quiz about this, theres not many cars around town.

Yo dude write me back man. I have that Airmass thundermuff exhaust system and i have a 1994 Honda civic EX and thjat shit is loud as hell man. So if your going to buy it get ready to buy a silencer or receive a ticket. Its not that loud on the highway while your cruising but when you punch it it hurts your ears.I put a silencer in it and i just take it out when im going to race. I can tell you one thing i beat a 5.0 mustang cobra with only headers, the exhaust, and a cold air intake system. All of that put together makes one hell of a combo. I recamend you buying it. I can feel the powerband and it really helps if the car is stick. So please write me back. See you later SHAWN

I hate to tell you something, the Mustang was not racing you. 5.0 cobra will smoke a stock civic, & I/H/E is stock IMO.

Flowmasters sound decent on 4-bangers - those chrome garbage cans don't do anything for me.

Yo dude i hate to tell you my civic aint stock i have a GREDDY TURBO and a hundred shot of NOS(which i didnt even have to use. So before you go hating find out exactly what i was saying. First off i was only mentioning what was exhaust realated so write me back man.

so i don't get it, why did you fail to mention the first time that your civic had a turbo? eh? no duh its gonna be faster than stock even if it didn't have the muff. remember bud all you probably added with the entire exhaust setup was like 10 hp maybe 20... and headers don't do alot for honda's cuz honda made the stock one so good in the first place. so its not like were all gonna be able to bolt on a bumble bee emulator and go murder 5.0's. anyhoo just stateing my oppion...

I have heard that the 5Zigen Fireball and the Skunk2 megapower are both VERY nice exhausts. I myself am about to go with the Skunk2 Megapower. From what I've heard the 5Zigen Fireball is a louder exhaust while the Skunk2 isn't quite as loud but it's a lower tone. So to me the Skunk2 sounds better. AND I love the way the Skunk2 exhaust looks. Just my opinion. Then again half the members here don't like the kitin my sig so...

I don't know about that. I have a catback airmass thundermuff on my 98 hx 5speed and it's one of the deepest nicest sounding exhausts i've ever heard. I don't know about civiclover94 having to put a silencer in, something must be messed on his car. I really recommend it, you won't be disappointed. It's really low, not ricey sounding at all. In my opinion it sounds better than a greddy and tanabe, but i've never heard a 5zigen on a civic yet, so i can't compare that one. There is a little notice in power gain, but you can't expect a ton, after all it's only an exhaust, maybe 5-7hp gain.

Oh yeah, and the thundermuff does have a gigantic 5" tip, kinda ricey but i'll take a 5" tip anyday over the other loudass fart cannons i hear all the time. Also, if the exhaust comes with a silencer, dont get it (if you want a deep throaty sound that is). I haven't yet heard a silenced muffler that sounded good. They're always loud as hell and sound like ass. Also, holley makes flowtech exhaust, and flowtech makes airmass. There isn't a logo that says "holley" on the exhaust anywhere, infact it says nothing. I disagree with the fact that holley doesn't know what they're doing because they make "muscle car" parts. Don't get me wrong, i'm not fond of muscle cars at all. But edelbrock is mainly muscle cars and they just came out with a kickass turbo kit for the civic ex. I'd say go with the airmass exhaust, if you're looking for the deep throaty toan and power gain. If it doesn't please you, you may personally fly out to Michigan and kick my ass. :D

And dont listen to civiclover94, he sounds like a white wanna-be gangster, not to mention he has a header, turbo, and 100 shot of NAWSSSS

I have seen the header he is talking about before in the summit catalog, the blue airmass one. I will give them credit, it is a different color. I am curious though, how does the 4-2-1 blue airmass compare to, say a DC Sports 4-2-1 Ceramic coated header. Is the quality similer between the two? How about the expected @ the wheels gains (I know it won't be much differnt). Does one possess a better low end? I am just curious, cuz I think it's kind of neat someone actually has a color other than Polished stainless, chrome, or the flat cermaic color. I personally think the DC Sports would be better, but like I said, I have no experience with the Airmass one, so I really don't know.

JakeDrummer
11-18-2003, 07:27 PM
yah I don't know how the headers compair. but here is holly's site on them:

http://www.holley.com/HiOctn/ProdLine/Products/ES/ESAM/ProRace.html

There probably just about the same DC sports, not to give any credit to holly but they designed them, and holly has been building headers since the begining of time practicly. They come in chrome, black, and the blue, which is nice because its just something different. I might start a fight here, but is there really that huge of a difference between headers anyhow?

Oh, no kidding. That would serious suck to have on and have that name engraved onto the tip, lol. When someone asks the name, just tell them it's a Airmass Cat-Back exhaust system, made by Holley. That way, you don't have to say that god awful name, lol.

hey sorry bud... no i'm still getting it even though the name sounds sorta gay. i'll have one on my teg once the snow melts. anyhoo herer is my speach;

Oh its alright, i just wan't sure if you were bashing the fact that i have it or if you were bashing the name. I completely agree with ya 100% on your "speech". Everyone now-a-days thinks they're hardass because they have big brand name everything, and sometimes the reality is, it's not always the best. I have an ebay intake for 30 bucks, why spend 180 on an injen or aem for 1hp more or a carb sticker (which i dont need in MI). And people have told me my exhaust was the deepest sounding on a 4 banger they've ever heard, yet it still sounds mean as hell at high rpm. Anyway, good call on the speech. :bigthumb:

Yea, I have a CAI made by my buddy that used to own a shop. He put it on free when I swapped in the motor. I don't need the AEM name, my "custom" one works just as well, and costed a hell of a lot less...free!!! On the topic of the thundermuff sound, it's just sad they had to stick a 5 inch tip and a dumb name like thundermuff on an exhaust that as you said actually sounds decent on a 4-banger (I haven't actually heard a thundermuff before. If it has a low tone, thats good, a lot of exhaust systems, even the name brands, have a high pitch sound that is just loud and annoying).

i went and dug though my parents recycling bin and found a 5" coffee can and stuck it on my tegs tail. it acctully doesn't look that bad on an integra, it seems to fit. although it looks alittle big on my civic. 5" tip.... oh well, i'm just gonna deal with it. plus doesn't the thundermuff come with a carb sticker? the cops around here are starting to put out court orders making ppl pull there exhausts off there cars. I know of two different dudes that its happened to now in town. how gay is that now? I would love to get pulled over with it on and wave the carb sticker in the cops face.

I bought my airmass system on ebay which was meant for a 92-95 civic ex, so I just brought it to an exhaust shop, had an extra foot of pipe welded on, and stuck it on my 98 HX. It was brand new and came in the airmass box, but there wasn't a carb sticker. No need for one in MI, but anyway, im almost 100% positive the airmass system is street legal, as it says next to the item in summit sport compact or jc whitney sport compact (one or the other). You could try cutting that page out, or maybe e-mail holley and ask them for one. But I could be wrong, since airmass has 2 systems, the warlock, which i know is street legal, and it's the less expensive, less powerful of the two, and the thundermuff i think is legal too, but double check.

A coffee can is gay, not a law on annoying ass exhaust. Damn ricers ruined for everyone. The ricers I mean is the ones who rev their shit every time they pass you or come up next to you - fucking morons. There was a guy doing that in a S2000 the other day to me, LOSER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think its more about the noise then a CARB sticker

If you want to hear good sounding exhaust(actually open headers) come down to our shop while me break in a built olds 455 -we have to run the engine @ 1500-2000 RPM for 20 minutes and we aint putting the exhaust on til last!!!!!

JakeDrummer
11-26-2003, 04:39 PM
i donno if your bashing my visual proportioning that i did with the coffee can or what. the entire reason i did it was to see if the thundermuff tip would look in proportion to the rest of the car. I'm not that gay of little cheap ass punk that i would weld a coffeecan on my tip so that i would look cool. I have an integra after all bud, not a $500 rusted out 88 civic 4 door auto. So i am by no means gonna cobble something up, do it right the first time or don't do it at all is my motto. anyhow if i took yah wrong sorry but i'm just saying i'm not a cheep little punk. but yeah i agree about all the stuped ricers who drive by me and rev. that gets anoying having alittle overgrown bumble bee buzz every time you pass a riced out civic. Those ppl should be the ones that get pulled over for being a jackass. This dude i know who had to get rid of his system was just pulled over going down the road. he wasn't reving someone or running in 2nd gear at 45mph. he was just crusing along at 45mph in 5th gear in prelude and they pulled him over. now he has a court order that he has to sell his system in 30 days. now thats gay isn't it?

JakeDrummer

yeah i checked all of the airmass stuff is 50 state legal with carb stickers. I found that right on the Holley web site. but yah good idea about printing something out for some backup. the cops in this town hate imports i'm begining to think.

It really depends on what systems you want from 5ZIGEN. May I remind you they are exhaust specialists for over 20 years and are ranked in the top 3 in Japan. If you want street legal(JASMA) systems, they are certainly going to be quieter than the sports muffler line they have which is for circuit use.
