changing oil

I have a 99 civic EX.

I was wondering if it is ok to change my oil every 4K instead of 3K.
I do not run this car hard.

I change my oil every 20,000 miles :) But change my oil filter every 3000 miles. If you are using pure synthetic motor oil you don't have to change it for at least 10,000 miles since synthetic doesn't break down as quickly as conventional motor oil.

The changing oil every 3000-4000 miles is something the dealers and oil companies do to make a profit.

What is the max you should do w/ regular oil?

conventional oil is about 3000-5000 miles. Under extreme driving conditions. I know people who change their oil at 1000-2000 and that's throwing away money.

Dont you notice how black your oil is after 3K miles?? I would NEVER go more than 4K miles w/o changing my oil. Just my $0.02 tho...

I know I couldn't believe it but after talking to my sponsor and his friends who swear by Amsoil. Read the website and the back of the bottles.

They have also sent out the oil for testing to make sure (he had it in his truck for 35,000 miles) and got back paperwork saying the oil is still good for about 10,000 more miles.

Yes I read the Amsoil link. I am just not sold on it. I think it is good to get the oil out of the crank case. You still have micro pieces of metal in the oil from wear and tear. I use to change the oil every 3k then I went to 4k. I just wanted to see what other people do w/ regular oil (non syn) I will keep w/ 4k or 4 months oil changes (which ever comes first) When you go to 4K you are only talking three oil changes a year that is not a lot of money nor time, if you do it your self.

Change your oil when your car starts to ask for it. If everything is good on the car (plugs, air filter....) yet your car runs like a lawn mower it is time to change the oil; 4,000-7,000 km for me depending on how I drive. I think the organic oil would be good for at least 6 months regardless of mileage with a magnetic drain plug and oversized filter. Cleaning the magnetic plug and changing the filter regularly should allow sysntetic oil to last a loooong time, probably well over a year. But I do not want to risk having some shaving jam a valve or anything else on my engine at 160 km/h, so I use regular oil and change it when the car does not like it anymore.

Amsoil is good stuff - I would never go more than 7500 miles with any oil. I change the oil on my Vette(mobil 1 syntetic) every 3 months, whether I drover her 10 miles or 1,000 miles - never have gotten to 3,000 miles before the 3 months. The civic I change every 3,000 miles, full synthectic. I would not do it that ofter if I didnt have access to what I do(shop, lifts, parts/fluids for cost, etc.)

BMW recommends every 15,000 miles, my buddies 330i started ticking after 10,000 miles.

Its your engine do you what feel is right, I change mine every 3months or 3,000 miles.

Honda recommends 7500 mile intervals for oil/filter changes under "normal driving" conditions.
