Any way of testing the speedo and VSS?

My speedo was on the way to dying - it flicked down to 0 then back to the speed I was travelling at intervals and then died completely. I would say cable, but it doesn't have one. Is there any way of testing the speedo and VSS (vehicle speed sensor) to see which is stuffed?
The car is an imported Civic with B16A Engine/Y1 Tranny
I can get a replacement VSS from Strong in NZ - but cant locate a speedo
Thanks

I mistakenly wired my vss line to the check engine light when I was installing my SiR cluster. I found out because when I test drove my car, the check engine light would blink when I drove forward...meaning it sends an electronic signal. You may want to attach a tester to the lead wire of your vss then drive a block or two to find out if it's sending a signal or not...then i guess, process of elimination it's either the vss or the speedo.
