Social movements have been an integral part of the history of the United States. We've encountered the Women's Rights Movement, the Civil Rights Movement, movements for Welfare Reform, countless movements for peace during wartime..etc...

So, considering all these social movements, which do you think was the most influential in the 20th century?

all things considered i think womens rights. i really hate to say this (cuz its pretty sad i think) but although the civil right movement accomplished so much, there is still so much racisim in this country to say that it was the most influential. thats just my view i would like to see what yall have to say too.

Dante: How do you always manage to reveal a topic just as soon as we are done talking about it in Soc class?? *lol* :hehe:

I'd tend to agree that women have seemingly accomplished more by their movement than any of the minorities have.... I'll think up something more to say later.

To be honest, just about the only movement that was most influential would be to me, Saving the earth.

The reason I say this is because all of those other movements you mentioned, aren't really addressed in today's society like the movement to save this planet. Racism, sexism, religion, all that stuff, is still to be treated with the respect it deserves.

Shit, they do more to preserve things than they do to protect ones rights. I just think that so much still has to be done before I will say one of those things are influential.

The womens sufferage at the beginning of the century was a huge turning point. Getting women the right to vote truely influenced the country even more then all the other movements combined.

As a side note - did you know that American Indians were the last group of people in this country to get the right to vote. It was nearly twenty years after women earned the right. Talk about being the first in and getting pushed to the end of the line.
