02 Yukon won't start

I bought a 2002 Yukon XL two weeks ago with 36200 miles on it. Today I was unable to start it. It ran fine yesterday. When I turn the key it cranks and acts like it wants to start, but it never catches. I have checked the fire, and I have good fire.

I checked for some Technical Service Bulletins and found one on www.alldata.com #57 for Yukons that is titled Engine - Intermittent No Crank / No Start it is numbered 02-06-04-015 Mar 02. I have been unsuccessful in finding out what this TSB says. Anyone else have problems with their Yukon not starting?

Any help you can give me would be much appreciated.

Most likely senerio on this one is going to be a bad fuel pump.
Check the ECM-B fuse, if it is blown, the fuel pump is definately your problem.
You can also check for the presence of fuel pressure at the shrader valve on the fuel rail.


The TSB you mentioned does not apply to your problem.

I checked the shrader valve on the fuel L and had no pressure at all. I worked backwards and came to the fuel filter. I changed it out and I was able to start the car then. It ran good for two days after that. On the third day it would not start again. I pulled the filter off again and turned on the key to see what the fuel looks like as it comes out of the line. I only got a teaspoon or two of fuel out of the line. I did this twice more and I got the same amount. I was under the impression that I should get about a cup of gas out when I did this. When looking at the fuel, there were blacks particles and some white jelly looking blobs. Is this bad, am I going to have to change the fuel? Will I have to drop the fuel tank and get it cleaned out or could it be some other problem that I do not know about.

Could it be the fuel pump relay or the fuel pump itself?

These pumps operate at a high pressure (55-65 Psi). I would never recommend that someone do a fuel volume test on one of these systems.

Your problem is the fuel pump.
The black specs may be whats left of the pump brushes. I always inspect the inside of a fuel tank whenever I replace the pump (helps determine why it failed). If there is foreign material in the tank, I would remove the gas and flush the tank ( I would recommend a shop do this, they have the equipment to recover the contaminated water from the flushing procedure).
Also from experiance, these tanks are difficult to remove (especially with fuel in them) it takes some manuevering to get them in and out.

I have taken it to a repair shop and am going to let them do the work. I was just trying to ascertain whether it was a simple problem or not. Thanks for your help. You have made my first visit to this site a positive one.

Is there any recourse for this pump going out so soon relatively? It only has 36k on it. And maybe that is the answer as well, it has 36k. thanks
