If you want a dog that will protect you and is big but not naturally aggressive, I would suggest either a pure bred german shepherd or a pure bred bull mastiff.

If you want a dog that is big and naturally agressive I would suggest a doberman pincer or a pitt bull, both are known for having unstable tempers, I do not reccomend either around small children

A friend of ours got a pure German shepherd, the German version, not the American version. The German version is the one that the military and police forces use. He's a great dog, protective and very good with his 2-year old boy :)

If the dog is to only be handled by you and your family and kept away from strangers, then any of the dogs (except the chihuahua) above will do just fine. If this dog will have to deal with neighbors such as kids running around or no fence around the yard, you may consider something a bit smaller.

If you only want the dog around to disuade would be criminals then a retriever, bulldog or huskey would be more then adequate and those dogs (while very defensive with the family) are better with other peoples kids.

Perhaps you should give us some idea what kind of dogs you already like.

I hate what a bad rap Dobermans/Pit bulls/Rotties get. Yes, they can be aggressive, but it's over what they care about. One of my friends owns a rottweiler that is over 300lbs. The first time I met it, it jumped up on me and gave me a huge lick on the cheek. "Bubba" is an insanely sweet dog. All those dogs are just sensitive to how you treat them. Treat them nicely and respect them, and they will love you forever. Treat them badly and they won't. It's just that simple. I love pit bulls and boxers because of that. They get very VERY attached to people, and are such sweet dogs. And if you excercise, theyr'e great. Extremely athletic.
