Thinking Of Buying an RX7?

Hi,

I am thinking of saving up and buying a either 1st gen RX-7 between the years of 85-87 non-turbo for insurance reasons.
Or I am also thinking of buying a non-turbo 85-88 Nissan 300ZX.
I was tellin some kid about getting a 1st RX7 and he told me I had to rebuild the engine because rotaries will blow.
But i read somewhere that these rotary engines are very reliable and can go up to 300k miles.
If i was to get one it would probably have between 90-13-k miles on it.
But it would be a non-turbo.
I am sellin my civic to get a car with balls.
No offense to the civic i mean i love the car but with oly 92hp stock and i already have intake and exhaust it still isnt what i want.
My price rance is between 1500-2000 bucks.
U guys have any other input?
Thanks

good luck. all i know is that they are EXTREMELY reliable and are quite fast. i don't know who told you that, they were wrong

talk to dayna240sx, she has like 3 of them.

Check out

www.Rx7club.com Big forum completely aimed at RX-7s. You can probably get some good advice there.

Non turbo rotaries are super reliable.

The turbos downfall was heat. Find a way to deal with the heat and they're reliable too.

Turbo models weren't at all reliable. Heat was a big issue and port overlap was as well. Personally I would avoid the RX-7.

Either non-turbo or turbo models can build massive amounts of heat...anything is reliable...for the most part with proper care....1st gen rx-7's span from 79-85...you are looking at a 2nd gen....as no first generation's were turbo's....port overlap can be a problem ...for 1500-2000 dont expect to much from an rx-7....they dont depreciate very much and for that much finding one that hasnt been abused or that is in half way decent condtion might be a little hard....but good luck on finding one

RX-7 equals a no go in my book. This car does have balls but if you want to drive it like it has balls you are going to wear out the engine alot faster. Those reliable engines up to 300k are when you drive it perfectly and get it serviced all the time.
I expect you will be doing a lot of High reving and clutch dumping so i would look at a different car. Of course i do know people who swear by these cars i dont really like em.
Your choice overall though.

Seen a built LT1 in an older RX7, and a LS1 in the newer RX7's. Both of them hauled serious ass. If you're thinking of messing with new engines, I'd seriously look into that route...

or a LT1 in a 240z

The V8 RX7 is probably the best performance car bargain out there... then again, it can be a little too much power for some people to handle :evillol:
