My odometer is no longer lit and I want to investigate why. It went off one day, camr back on the next and now it appears to be gone for good. Is this likely a backlight problem or worse? anyone help. Also does anyone have instructions on getting into the back of the instrument panel so I may investigate further?

Well I have a 1999 Sunfire and I have noticed that it has some cluster problems too. I think that all sunfires end up having cluster problems. I haven't had too many just sometimes my odometer messes up and my seat belt light blinks constantly.

You may have to open the display cluster and replace the bulb, it sounds like it has blown, I had a similar problem in an '86 Hyundai, and in an '93 Saturn SL. If you open your display cluster up, it probably just takes a genearic bulb.

BE VERRY CAREFULL, FIND INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE TAREING INTO YOUR DASH!! IF YOU DON'T, YOU COULD ACCIDENTLY INFLATE YOUR AIR BAG!!! :shakehead

My odometer failed(went out) on my 2000 Sunfire at 40,000 kilometers. The GM dealer had to replace the whole guage cluster. I am glad my car was still under warranty cause the dealership said it was about $800.00! I asked them if it was a lamp and they said the 2000 sunfires had a problem with the guage cluster. I also had to replace the ABS sensors due to failure at around 50,000 kilometers.

I too have a '99 SunfireGT. And boy have I had quite an experience with that thing. I also had the odometer problems where the digits show random numbers. However, the most recent odometer problem is , as mentioned, my light went out. There is a little bulb on the instrument cluster that brightens up the odometer digits so that you can seem them. There are tiny bulbs for everything on the dash. But the odd part is that GM uses a different sized bulb socket for the odometer. And the kicker is they don't sell a replacement! Instead they want you to drop $300+ for a whole new cluster, can you image?! Well heck if I'm going to do that just for a 50 cent bulb! My mechanic looked around and couldn't get anywhere w/ the problem; we even tried resoldering the old socket onto a new bulb. But we must have had a voltage problem because the light blew out after a week. I then tried looking around at junkyards to find the light. Finally I just gave up and wait for a sunny day (or sometimes a flashlight) in order to see my mileage.

Also, another fun experience. My headlights went out...my mechanic spent 20-30 hours trying to find the problem. Apparently it was just a little 25 cent wire that was rubbing and shorted out between the lights and the dash. Cost me $500 to fix that stupid problem (diagnostic time). Oddly right after this was when I had the odometer light problem.

Oh and my climate control fan only works on the top 2 levels. The two lower fan speeds do not blow any air at all.

Needless to say I'm going to sell the car once I find a suitable replacement.

Well from what I understand there is a pink wire that's in the cigarette light holster which is attached to the computer. This wire could also be the problem with the odometer. I have a 2000 sunfire and I have to get it E-tested but with the engine light on and the odometer not working I need to somehow figure out what's causing this?
