Tell me that those pictures don't rock. You would think that for something that powerful, they could think of a better name then Isabel.

Where in Canada are you DG?
I must be south of you because the centre of the storm is over us right now.

it's still raining and very windy here, just half an hour north of Toronto. the weather guy said we should get the eye (or what's left of it) around 2pm, and it's now 1. so he said to expect the worst just before and after that.
as long as the Signal Auto Drift Exhibition in Brampton tomorrow isn't affected, i'm all good.

The storm just passed over us last night, and what a night. Good forecast for the weekend and i got off school for 2 days  . I guess all those ricers with their neons and civics finally get to test out their $30 5ft aluminium spoilers and see how good it keeps their cars on the ground.

That's not a super tanker, this is a super tanker:
http://members.shaw.ca/rugburnt/MV%20Mimosa%20-%20tanker.jpg
I saw the ship above just after she went through a tropical storm, breached holds and broken steering gears - a super tanker is not as safe as you would think.
Compared to a regular tanker, like the one in the first photo:

That first picture is pretty damn impressive. Scary looking storm to see while out at sea.Agreed! Nice find, YM.
Locally in CT we got next to nothing when you look at the damage caused in places like Kill Devil Hills, NC and Virginia Beach, VA. It was strange how it moved into the state, in these broken up bands of precipitation. But ultimately, it wound up covering just about every square inch of the state (try and find a weather station in Connecticut that didn't get at least 0.2" of rain today) in rain in just a few hours.
Isabel collided with what was a very impressive cold front as it moved through the mid west (it formed a solid line of strong storms from Wisconsin all the way down into central Texas). They collided in Ohio and West Virginia, and now the weakened, remaining mass is pushing east by northeast through Pennsylvania and New York.

Damn my brother is smart. He took one look at that first picture and called bullshit. He's right. With a hurricane over open ocean comes huge waves. Every see a hurricane swirling over an ocean like glass, as in the first picture? It looks so cool, because it must be a photochop.

Judging distances over the ocean is a tricky thing, unless you have something in the distance to measure against.
The horizon you see in the middle of that picture is going to be around at least 80 or so miles away.
Judging from satellite pictures of Isabel, which shows it's size capable of almost covering whole states, and the image of Isabel on that pic, there might be 100-ft waves underneath it, but we won't see it. Also, the waves won't ripple 50 miles or so toward the ship, especially since the ocean is "only" being whipped in a large circle, as opposed to a large explosion that has force going outwards.

I thought about that too, but I figured that one would still see more "disturbance" on the surface of the ocean than is shown here. You call that a Cyclone???????? You make me sick :uhoh: :uhoh:   Actually, here on the Atlantic Ocean, we call them hurricanes :smooch: I know in New Zealand and those portions of the Pacific those manner of storms are called typhoons.

Ever heard of "the calm before the storm"? ;)
That is exactly what you're seeing there. Also, to be close enough to see the ocean being whipped by storm winds, is TOO close for any ship. The way the ocean works underneath the storm, the ship will have to fight currents that will be trying to suck that ship in to its heart.
How do know all this? I've lived in a tropical country that was composed of mostly islands, and annual typhoons was a way of life. Oh, and my parents owned a shipping company, and I got to cruise in plenty of ships when I was young...even alone.

I went thorugh it living in Va Beach and I gotta say that one sucked for it being my first and we were right beside the worse of it from what I heard. it apparently changed directions and got closer to us but I was outside most of the time takin' my own pics and talkin' to the neighbors.
I think the worse part was the stupid power companies shutting down power a day before she hit and then not getting it back till 3 days later. Hell, there are still places 'bout 10 min from here without power....
