What grade fuel do you use? Does it really matter that much?
They say for prelude, use premium fuel. I've been using 89 though.

i use 91 because they recommend it for the GSR. Ive had friends who have used lower than what it says and you can finally hear the valves start to tick...

Actually it does matter in my book. Running on 89 octane is, well kindly saying, stupid. If you like to jump on the pedal you need to run 93 octane or the highest pump gas you can. Otherwise your car will just not be running to its full potential. A higher octane means a hotter combustion which means faster track times and better throttle response when you need to push the pedal to the floor.

I hope you don't run a 15.6 with a gsr motor and all that stuff you listed. That is really slow. I helped my friend in his 92 honda with a f22 engine run a 14.8@ 96mph. And thats with a AEM cai, HP racing header, Random Technology catalytic conv., and a 5Zigen muffler with custom 2.5in. piping. Somethings wrong there with your gsr. I have friends with gsr's that have exhaust, intake, and clutch and run 14.9.....

It matters. High compression need higher octane gas.

87 oct. here. No need to run something higher that's just gonna waste every last penny you spent on the higher price of it. Only ricers use higher octain unless you have a REAL reason to need it like a higher C/R you're running in your motor, or if you are boosting with either turbo or S/C. Otherwise, you're just a moron that doesn't understand the concept of gasoline, octain and why if the manufacture doesn't recommend higher, then you probably don't need it. :loser: You wanna be fast with better gas, then run either 100+ octain racing gas, or 120 octain Avgas, not this pansy pissant 91 oct. premium unleaded junk that you don't need unless you run a B16, or B185C.

octain,
120 octain,
pansy pissant
B185C.
tipping the bottle a bit have we???
just playing man.
well i usually run 89 cause it aint worth buying the higher stuff. But after awhile u can hear the lifters tick, so then i run 93 for a few weeks.

yeah, I think if I don't rev high, keep it under 4k rpm, so long as the engine doesn't knock, then I shouldn't need higher octane.
the reason they have different octanes is so there aren't any spontaneous combustions right?
I think when they recommended 91 for prelude, they assumed the driver is going to redline and drive hard. I'm keeping it well below 4k.

It's a bit of a drive, but I get 94 when I can, otherwise 93. My engine's potential is brightest with 105+, but I can't find it anywhere and it's also like $4-$5 a gallon :headshake

I usually try and run 93 sometimes I get 94. but when I find that my wallets emty I have no problem fillin her with 87 (performance def. drops though)

i see 87 while driving on the street. when the bottle goes open on the track i run av gas and take the timing back to 16btdc instead of the advanced setting i run on the street. personaly my car runs great on 87....only reason i run av gas is im afraid of detonation...plus 100 octane pump gas is $4 gal and av gas is $2.50 gal.

Anyone run alchy? I know that you can get more from methanol than from gasoline, but at a reduced gas mileage. I figure people would use this stuff at the track. Although you would need to replace your fuel hoses with upgraded ones so they dont break, that would seem to be the only consequence.
I am taking this from a much smaller engine standpoint, becuase gasoline 4 strokes can't usually compete with methanol/nitro engines on dirt bikes (etc). I know that its hard to start, but thats easily fixed, just blend some nitro or dont run 100%.
Im pretty sure that they run cleaner too...
Just wondering,

I'm not sure how reliable this info is but I got it from a mechanical guru. If you use something like 93 it burns more efficiently and a little cooler than using a lower octane like 87. an octane like 87 explodes more causing more knocks and pings and it also burns hotter. A bit of power comes from the more efficient 93-105 octane, but I think some of the power comes from the fact that ten degrees hotter in the engine costs you a couple of ponies. And Ricochet check around at your local airports and see if you can get 105-110 octane. Should cost you about 3 to 5 bucks. Just be sure to check your manual and see what percentage of lead/methanol...etc you can have in your fuel. probably 10% lead at most.

yeah watch the lead.....aviation fuel is highly leaded in most places...the aviation fuel i use is 124 octane and will kill o2 sensors left and right.

I don't have a manual for my jdm swap, just for the old DX engine :)
