I have a 89 gt and its got the smog pump on it, not sure if its called a smog pump but its on the left side of the engine on the bottom and it has a pipe connecting to the exhaust were the h-pipe was, when i put my x pipe on i cut it off the exhaust, Now i was wondering what the hell the purpose of this pump is and can i rip all the hoses and the whole thing out of my car do i need it? Although this pump does rob horsepower like any other accesory on your car. It is a key piece of emission equipment. Chances are your car will not pass emissions without it but then agian it might... every state/car is different. But otherwise you can take it off and remove the hoses and plug things and the car will run w/o it

The smog pump does not rob any noticeable amount of power from the engine, especially compared to the power steering or AC compressor. The smog pump is a key piece in emissions control with in the vehicle. It's purpose is to feed fresh air to the catalytic converters, to keep carbon build up to a minimum. If you are running an O/R H or X pipe, then the smog pump is doing nothing for you anymore. Beware, your car may not pass emissions without the smog pump.

I have had my smog pump removed for 2 years now, because it makes the engine bay look so much cleaner. It's fairly easy to do, just unbolt the pump, plug the vacuum lines, plug the holes in the back of the heads, and plug the air inlet tube in the O/R pipe. If you need any more info let me know, and I'll go into detail.
