Positraction

I have a question about my rearend, when I burnout or jump on it I only leave 1 tire mark, the passenger side...

Now, a ford mechanic told me that all 86 5.0's with 5 speeds had positraction rear ends, but if I have posi, shouldn't I be leaving two marks?

So, is the mechanic full of it, or am I thinking of posi the wrong way?

First of all it's called traction-lok, or trac-lok. And it's standard on all 86 gts. The only rear end option is the gearing ratio.

So, should both wheels be spinning, or just 1?

Your 86, if V8 should have a 8.8 limited slip rear diff. So yes, both tires should be spinning, if not then your clutch pack is shot. Also, no mustang ever came with Posi-Trac (Positive Traction).

The new ones, for sure, sometimes do a two wheel burnout. Lately, mine has only been doing one.

Eh there boys. I've been driving with the same problem for a few months now. I first thought that my posi clutch had worn out because in the rain only my rear right tire would spin, same thing when I would do a burnout at the dragstrip.

I'm now starting to think it could be a result of post-storage maintanance : when I had the diff fluid changed in May I asked for synthetic but the my dealer buddy said it couldn't be used for my model year. But he did say there was an additive they could put in and so it was included. I think that the additive could be causing the posi to slip. ANY time there is traction both wheels will light up and hook (leaving equal patches), but the second the rear left loses traction it ALL goes straight to the rear right. Its really hard to drive in the rain now.

If your Pony did come with posi/limited-slip/etc... and its only laying down one patch I'd get the differential fluid changed (when was the last time it was changed??). Besides that the posi clutch could just be worn out. Time to get an Auburn posi!

fool - mustangs man, mustangs don't have posi's or posi clutches. Thanks for your help all the same though.

same shit - my Z has a limited slip as well, and there ARE clutches in there - once worn out it will spin only one wheel.

right right, i just didn't want to confuse the new guy with all this talk of posi and trac. have you gotten your posi rebuilt? I'm interested in the costs involved - and i ain't going to do that shit by myself.

Rebuild is so not worth it. The money it would cost to get an expert to fix it right would be more than the cost of an aftermarket differential.

Even my contacts at Pontiac and Chevy dealerships who could get it fixed for me cheap agree it wouldn't be done right there. :disappoin

I'll keep running mine and searcing eBay for a cheap stock replacement until the new 12 bolt arrives. :evillol:

A Ford Trac-Loc if rebuilt by some1 who knows what they are doing can be a very good unit. Also the additive at leats for Ford is called "friction modifier" it's to help keep the clutches in the diff from being destroyed and to engaged better.

Yes, there are some very ignorant LS1 owners out there that really believe their F-body turns low 13's on shitty road pavement, using street tires, with all of their stereo and hockey crap piled in the back. :headshake

Its funny how a lot of these dudes who have never been to the track insist on knowing what mods you have, take time to think about them in their head(not knowing what you said half the time), decide that you are worthy of losing to them in a race, only to watch you beat them out by a car or two and in some cases leave them in the dust when its time for them to use the gearbox.

Were us LT1 guys ever that conceited? I mean no offence to anyone (in the whole forum), but back in '93 I think we had much less competition than the LS1's are currently up against. What cars were pushing around 300 horsepower back then at any price?

I don't think LT1 guys are as concieted... My friend's has a 94 Z28 and he has beaten many LS1 cars with a basically stock LT1. And he even gets pissed at thier attitude towards him, like he's not worthy.

The LT1 Is a Chevy engine, It started from 93-98, after 98 there was the LS1 up until now. Camaros and Corvettes and some other Chevy cars(A Yukon i think and even the new Caprice Classic) have the same engines. I think i said everything right, correct me if im wrong.
