302 vs 351

whats the difference between those engines? is the 351W really a 5.8? also, what is each engine putting out on torque and hp. o and which would 'respond' better to mods like superchagers headers ect.
thx

A 351CI motor is actually 5.75289 Liters.
Stock for stock, I would take the 302. Modified, I would take the 351. Both have many aftermarkert parts readily available, and both will respond well to mods.

All i gotta say is I love the 302, high reving, awesome sound, my favorite engine of all time.

the 302 responds a LOT better to boost than a 351, especially stroked out.

351..... stroked to a 408 *nuts* nothing imho will ever beat the engine. DSS has one with 600 hp.... Try getting that out of any stock and stroked 302. the 351 block is bullet proof. it can handle lots of boost, and i think they sound a lot better than a 302

um, in case u didn't know the 351 is the same block as the 302 bored w/ a taller deck height. and actually if u do some reading, almost every single 5.0 bracket racer out uses a 306, 331, or 347 with a custom high boost turbo system, intercooled. 408's are phasing out cause they just dont rev like a 302! Besides a 302 is a lot more streetable anyday.

Incase YOU didn't know 351's are the same bore as a 302, taller deck height and half an inch more stroke. And saying almost every single 5.0 turbo racer uses a 306, 331 or 347 just isn't true. Lets look at NMRA, for example. Anybody in pro 5.0 using a 302/8.2 block? Nope. Anyone in SSO? Yep, because they're limited to 360 inches (most running 3.4" stroke 4.1" bore) and going to a 351W and adding that bit of weight doesn't make any sense. Lots of blower cars running 351's though. How about renegade? Once again, limited to 360 inches so not many people go for the extra weight of the 351. NMRA drag radial, here again 360 inch limit for turbos/blowers so most people go 302 or 8.7" deck, all the competitive nitrous cars are 351's. Real street is limited to a 302. Looking into FFW, any classes where turbos and 351W's are allowed, you don't see any turbo 302 cars.
Talking about a street car, 408's arn't the greatest for a turbo motor because they make so much torque you're going to blow the tires away, and with the big stroke the piston pin is pushed up pretty high so it's hard to get the compression under 9:1 with a cylinder head with less than a 70CC chamber. A 383 is a much better choice, you make more power per pound of boost than a 302, 306, 331, or 347, the motor will last longer than a 347 because the piston pin isn't pushed up into the oil ring and you still have a nice rod/stroke ratio, plus the motor will be a lot snappier when driving around without boost. I don't know how you figure a 302 is more streetable because they make less torque and like to rev more.

thx for replys. i actually plan to drop it into a ranger (go figure). i should post it in the ranger forums, but only about 1/4 of the peopl intrested in racing, plus, stang owners know more about their engines...
anyways, i have another question. i really thinking bout the a 302 engine swap, but i was wondering how should i go about this? i was thinking about getting the engine and all the elecrical things i need to hook up ecu@ a salvage yard, rebuild and order a 5.0L conversion kit. how much do yall think that would cost, concidering i cant rebuild or install the engine.
please dont move my post, i think i can get more information in this forum than in the ranger forum. thx for help.

Dude, i dont know what year your ranger is (i might have missed that part). But if it is an older truck (90-93), it will be easier and cheaper to install the 302 in an older ranger. When you put the 8 into a newer ranger you run into space problems alot more than the older models. But either way you will have to pay a good amount of money to do the swap. By the way dont think that the ranger will automatically run 12's b/c the stock 302's are over-rated, (i have one, notice the screen name). So it's not worth your money if you just put a stock 302 motor into your ranger (plus it's a truck, which you run into tire spin with trucks, especialy with 300 ft.lbs of torque.) You'll probably end up spending more than 2,000 dollars w/ the swap.

calm down. i dont own any car or truck im 17 as of 9/30 and i wont get my drivers licence till 12/7 (2 mths 2 go). i wanted a fox body stang, but mom said its not gonna happen :( . i cant get full sized truck/F150 so 2nd best thing would be the ranger. i did my research, but i just trying to get info and opinion from stang site b/c 50%+ of the people here have 5.0L+. it would be fesable for me to get 14s or better on the track- hardtop bed cover would help out alot- weight on wheels, no air resistance. plus, engine is about 100 lbs more than 4.0L (iron vs alumium).
i dont know what year ranger(going 'shoping' 11/7  ) it will be, but i know that a 5.0L can be dropped into any ranger. what proof? the explorer, based on the ranger frame, has a 5.0 in it.
bottom line: 5.0/5.8L + superchager= a truck tha could destroy any STOCK GT( im NOT knocking the GT), and might even hang w/ a cobra, if the frame doesnt twist on me...
o well, i need to stop rambling...

Dont try and do an engine swap!!! You said a truck with a supercharger can doa GT. WHat about a supercharged GT against your truck? Besides noone usually races agains supercharged cars. So stop looking for a truck and concentrate on convincing your mom to allow you get a fox body!
BTW im turning 18 in 7 days and MY mom said that it would be stupid if a get a NON-sports car. Thats the fun of being a teenager.(She was a bit against a Mustang though :disappoin Women.) So i found my honey, 1993 5.0L GT Stock.
I hope i convinced you.

Anyone who doesnt feel like reading a story, just skip this post.
Here we go.
Last year i started really bugging my mom with car stuff, but she said that she will not even leet me do the license exam. Asking why? Cause i was so lazy and so bad at school ( Always C's and D'c, english system). Anyways, i had to do something about it, right? So, 2 months before my final exams, IGCSE's, I started studying like noone else did. What did i get? 1 A and 5 B's. How is that for good results?! So i went to school to get the results, when i saw them i was shocked. I took them, sat in the car and gave them to my mom. She looked at them and started driving, in ten mins she said, "Oleg(My name), you need a car".
Looooooool.

Or you could earn everything by your self... When I was sixteen I worked hard all summer long working anywhere between 40 & 70 hours a week in a kitchen. My prizes a trip to france and my first car A Porsche 944. :evillol: Since I earned everything by myself my parents couldnt really do anything about what car I got. If you work hard it also shows that you are responsible enough to have any car (in theory anyways, I got 2 Carless and imprudent driving tickets and lost the clutch within a one year peroid.)

b/c i dont know if i will be able to get a stang.... so i wanna get the same power on a different vehicle. thats why i think the ranger would kick ass. it weight just as much/slightly less than a stang, so it would be a perfect shoe in. plus, i want power. i looking for about 300 hp, whether i get the stang or not. the ranger's 4.0L sux. i mean, 160 hp (1997 model) is ok, and i could build off that, but i would have spent $2000 just to get about 220 hp. i could spend the same amount of money on the engine, rebuild kit, and other things i need such as headers, wireharness, ect. and get the same/more hp out of engine. BUT w/ a 302, the options are endless. after college, i could shoot for 1000 horses if i wanted.

you can get a stroker and supercharge it. 331bosted knows all about it, pm him. i think the 331 is better; but don't take my word for it - i am going to build a naturaly aspirated 331, i know little of chargers.
