I hear all these things about engine swaps and stuff, because the engine can't handle the power.

If I buy a 95 GSX and want to mod it and up the power, do I need to do an engine swap?

umm who ever said that needs to be shot!

no the 4g63 which comes in the dsm(95+eclipses) are very capable of holding power.. they are tin my opinion one of the strongest 4cyld motors for turbo..

they can hold 22psi on a stock bottom end but itz not recommended..
a midly tuned dsm with all supporting mods can easily make 300wheel hp and pull easliy high 12's to low 13's. it is a very tunnable car. with the supporting mods, right fuel mangament, upgraded turbo and about 18psiof boost you can easly make 400hp form a stock internal motor.

dsm tuning guide (http://www.dsmtuners.com/tuning-guide/2gturbo/)

look there
the only real peoblem is crankwalk which is a bitch.. if u want info on that go to google and type in crankwalk and you'll get all the info u need.

good luck

90-92 motors will handle 30 plus psi and 500 whp. 93-99 7 bolt motors will do over 400 whp, but ive heard of rods failing at ~27 psi on a large turbo. You cant quote what a block can handle in PSI, since every setup will flow different amounts of air at a particular psi. For example, you can run 24 psi on a 14b and get 30 lbs/min. At 24 psi on my setup, I get 47 lbs/min. Thats double the flow, and double the power. That means double the stress on the rods and other internals. Knock is the big killer though, and you can banjax the motor at any psi if you knock enough. Avoid it like the plague.

Crankwalk is a concern on 2g turbo cars. But its VERY rare. Be careful about what you believe when you research it. In my personal expereince, 90% of what I have read about it is pure crap. ITs all over the forums, peoples sites, vendor sites, etc. Almost all garbage. I've compiled most of the good stuff, combine with my experiences in crankwalking 3 95 motors, in a "sticky" topic at www.racingknowledge.org. Just go to the DSM section, its a sticky at the top of the page.
