Battery or Alternator?

2001 Dakota 4.7 liter V8
I drove my truck three times yesterday and everything was fine. Went out at about 7 but all i got was a click. Charged the battery with booster cables for 45 min, but only click. Had my wife rev her engine to 2500 rpm and then my engine turned over and started. As soon as I let go of the key the engine died, and would not re-start again. Battery didn't even have enough power to use the windows or the radio. At first I thought it was the battery, but that wouldnt cause the engine to die after the key is released. What's going on?
