Ok, Common Courtesy check...
Who here says please and thank you when they ask for something? I know I do...Is it just me or is it a common courtesie? It is something everyone should do.
See I have this problem with people not being courteous to others and I often find myself mentioning it too people. Example
I am at the chow hall this A.M. and heres the scenario
ArmyGuy: Can I get some chicken
ServerLady: Sure, honey any thing else?
ArmyGuy: Yeah, let me get some potatoes also
ServerLady: Is that it hun?
ArmyGuy: NO, Can I get some corn also
ServerLady: Anything else?
ArmyGuy: No, thats it *takes plate*
TheNotoriousMogg: Maybe you could get a side of manners and throw a please and thank you in there once and a while
dude just kind of shrugged it off and walked off...I hate this kinda shit, be courteous it aint that hard is it? this might have turned into a flame post....but either way I see this shit everyday and it pissed me off
What is everyone elses take on this?

I was taught at an early age to always say please and thank you. While I may slack on saying please sometimes, I always always say Thank You.

Haha friends pick on me for being too nice sometimes I mean it never hurts to say please and thank you, Haha I even do that when I'm at Mickey D's. Another thing I always stop whenever I see someone wanting to cross the road when I could easily blow right through it.
I mean it's just expected and I hope people would act the same to me, seeing as what goes around comes around.

Thanks for this thread Moggs, its perfect for a recent incident.
Recently, on this very forum, a certain user by the name of whiteracer asked if anyone knew where he could get his copy of his old avatar. I had a copy of this and posted it for him. I did not receive a thank you for this generous, kind and benelovent gesture. I remind him fairly often, but it seems to be a point of honour or something for him not to say thank you. I wont forget this, whiteracer, and whenever I see you step into an COT thread, I'll be there, waiting.
Its the youth of today. I was brought up being told to say please and thank you, ESPECIALLY if someone goes out of their way to do something for YOU. Not for themselves, but a selfless act of kindness.

The trouble with common courtesy,is that it is no longer common.
How many times have you been in a situation, say a takeaway bar,or supermarket, and the staff member who is being paid to serve you politely and efficiently manages to complete the transaction while carrying on a conversation with another staff member, only sparing you enough attention to demand the amount required? Happens to me all the time in city shops, and when I ask,"Are you paid to be indifferent to me,or is it just a hobby?" the offending operator is usually stumped for an answer.Yes,I KNOW these people are working long hours, for shitty money, and don't always get fair treatment from every customer, but it's what they get paid for,and it's common manners. There's no formal requirement in my job to be polite, and when I am,it confuses some of the less-evolved members of staff. But that doesn't prevent me from saying please and thankyou, from holding the lift door for the person behind me,or from opening the door when in the company of ladies.By and large, they seem to like it.

Its never a bad idea to show some common courtesy. Its expecially bad form not to respond in kind.

Agree with the sentiment in this thread. I serve customers for many of the hours of the week, and it's a BIG lesson in what not to do, how not to act and what not to say. So whenever I am the customer, I am as courteous as possible. In fact, Naki, the LESS enthusiastic someone else is in a transaction like the one you describe, the MORE enthusiastic I am. Just my own form of ultimate piss take. Eg, (bored McDonalds drivethru employee) Hi, how are you? " FANTASTIC! Just had the most magic weekend. You wouldn't beleive the party last night. And how are you?" Usually gets a look of surprise. I just give a manic grin and either continue if theres opportunity or keep grinning and leave. Gets em every time. I recommend trying it.

I find I become more polite the angrier and more abusive someone becomes. I commonly use this at work.
Not the internet though.

I was also raised to be polite and courteous. I met some real rude bastards at my info centre job. The one I remember most is some woman calls up for the number of something, I find it for her, give her the number, and she just hangs up. No thank you, nothing. Just hangs up.
Rude bitch.

I have people get shitty at work when I wont let them in. This is often due to us not being told they're coming or they dont bring any ID. How can I let someone in if I dont know who they are?

I always use common courtesy , even when dealing with customers I dont like or am recieving bad service. It seems nowaday that to alot of my more "hip" peers that being courteous is "not fly" and being an ass is cool , I hate it .

Zigackly! Just like common sense. Personally I think I'm pretty polite, although I do let it slide a bit when ignored by rude shop people etc. :p It really bugs me when people don't take to 1/2 second it takes to say please or thank-you.
(OT, but I also hate when people don't take the time to put their trolleys away at the supermarket, and just leave them there ready to roll into some poor unfortunate's car. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr)

As mom always said...you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. I almost always say P & TY, except for people who are super rude or nasty toward me, then at that point they don't deserve it.
