Ok im not really expierienced with engine work on cars, or any work for that matter, but anyways here goes

a guy i used to work with had a honda prelude a 91 SI, anwyays he sent out his engine to be modified to some r&m racing place or something liek that and they got it up to about 300hp for him. If i were to buy, lets say, an 89 supra with the 7m-ge engine, would there be anyplace that would modify it to have more hp without turboing it, and if so to about how much hp. Secondly I have a friend who said dont bother with earlier supras such as the 87 to 92s because they are more luxury than sport and arent fast at all, i kind of knew they were in the very early 80s but is this true and would it jsut be not worth it to ptu money into one at all. well thanks in advance for any and all responses

I’m looking in to getting a supra my self and modifying it. Your friend is right the 80's supras have softer suspensions, compared to the new ones. But just like with all other cars, there are plenty of suspension up grades which you can install. As for the motor, there are shops that do that for a living, and when it comes to a supra i'm sure that you'll not have a problem in finding one. There a several different things that you can do before you have to go to a supercharger or a turbo. Like swapping your intake and exhaust manifolds, boring out you cylinders, over sizing your intake and exhaust valve ports, replacing your injectors with bigger ones, replacing your fuel rail with an higher pressure one, dropping an higher volume fuel pomp in your tank, swapping your cams, swapping your pistons and even your crank. So you some options before you have to go to a turbo...

But why are you so afraid of a turbo???

Got boost??

the problem with the 7MGE is that the head is too restrictive. and no amount f porting can fix it. that along witht he short bore long storke truck engine characteristics makes it very difficult to make power. one guy modded everything in the motor and could only muster 280rwhp. the head restricts flow that bad. id love to see it happen but to be honest it just isnt worht the money involved to make it powerful.

The MK3 is a GT car, a big heavy beast. Just swap in a 7mgte or if you're up for a more expensive and comlicated job, a 1jz. Just replace the head gasket before you put it in (on the 7mgte). And get a downpipe too.

Well i agree with him about the GT car. the car is at its best with high speed touring, its not too good with low speed meneuvering[sp] but it rules at high speed anything. taking a turn at tripple the posted limit is an awsome feeling.

but you dont have to have a turbo motor to reach the 14's. it would just be cheaper to use a turbo, but about the same to run a mid to low 14 in either case after you add up the GTE swap. if you buy basic mods like intake, header, 2.5 madrel bent catback, then got an ignition, s-afc, and upped the fuel pressure. and mated with a lightweight flywheel, clutch, driveshaft you will be in the low 14's and you will be much happier with the performance. i mean neck snapping trottle response, and a beast off the line. the car will be amazing to drive. however you will be maxxing out the motor. where as the turbo motor you will just be starting. a typical turbo swap is 1500-1800 and thats a stock swap then add another 1000-1500 for mods to get to the low 14;s. but if you bought all that you will have spent about 2,000-2,500 for those mods. trust me i have done all the research. i even found ind. throttle bodies that could be fabricated to work. i planned to spend 6-8 grand on my 7mge and id would be in the mid to low 13's. and i still want to do it but for me right now the best bang for the buck is what i need now. so til im out of college im just going to swap in a 1jz. better motor all around than the 7MGTE in every way except torque. no replacement for displacement. i say if you have the money and only looking for a low 14 sec car. stay with the GE. :2cents:
