I live in New Jersey and we have to get our cars inspected. I was wondering if turbo or any other mods like headers, CAI, or whatever would fail state inspection? I know that I called the NJ DMV and the lady said that any aftermarket parts you add to the vehicle will fail, but I see TONS of Hondas around here with headers and cat-back exhausts....and turbcharged vehicles. What the heck!! That takes the fun out of owning a car if you cant do SHIT to it. Has anyone passed inspection in a state that requires emissions or just a regular inspection? If so what mods did you have? Do they have to open up the hood and do a visual check? The lady said that if they see a turbo in the engine and it's not a stock or factory turbo it will fail without even doing emissions.....I'm VERY pissed because I was planning on turbocharging my LS. So someone please let me know if you ever heard of this crap.

Well I sorry but she right in a way. I live in Cali were the inspection are just Bull$h*t. But if your looking to get a turbo that's legit then go for a Greddy turbo that a C.A.R.B. legal. If their legal in Cali they must be in NJ. As far a header as long a you still keep the heatshield cover. Catback exhausts should be cool. Why are you getting it inspected? Is it for smog?

Edelbrock and Greddy both make 50 state C.A.R.B legal turbo kits. I'd look into one of those if you want to run a turbo.

I'm pretty sure that almost any header will not accomidate the factory heat shield.
You could always give the inspector $20 for the inspection and $20 for themselves. :evillol:

yeah just to add my 2 cents michaelsd16c is right. I live in cali and they are anal about smog testing. Almost all of my friends know where to get a car smog passed that would not normally pass if you get what I mean *wink *wink- I do not know if this is an option cuz u said inspection though. plus like michaelsd16c was saying you cant go wrong w/ 50 state legal parts, be sure to keep all the right paper work with that to. the lady u talked to is right too- Ive heard of people out here failing inspection before they actually smog the car cuz a part wasn't oem. But like michaelsd16c asked what is the inspection for? sorry for the length

if u want to turbocharge ur ls go with greddy or rev hard they will pass inspection. those two kits will make around 70-80 hp at 7psi. rev hard offers two more options a stage 2 and 3, those are the ones that won't pass, due to the high output of power its creating. i just smogged my car 2 weeks ago, /w aem cai and greddy full catback exhaust and it pass. oh one more thing the cai must be smog legal or have a carb sticker. if it doesn't, most shops would just turn u away. im really considering of the rev hard stage 2 but have no clue how im gonna pass smog?

hey this is slightly off topic but could possibly help in the future- can you modify the boost of a street legal turbo. Make it higher and if need-be tune it back down when getting smogged so you pass?

They can't tell by looking if you boost the internals of the engine, so as long as you keep the boost at the original level you should be fine.
Also, it's not a bad idea to take off your rims, and do whatever you can to make your car look less like a high performance machine. If your cai isn't smog or card legal, then just swap back your stock intake.
