have you ever inspected your rockers and noticed that there are small pistons which engage the extra rocker that rides on the bigger lobe of the cam?????
I just found out that you need min...100psi of shop pressure in order for the pistons to engage the extra rocker.....if any one would like to know...
I know that Honda came out with several different designs of vvti what kind do you have honda99

first of all, Honda call it system VTEC, VVTI is treadmark of Toyota.
seems like thing that you call small piston is top end of valve stem.
solinoid engauges VTEC system on your engine by internal oil pressure. system engaugement is controlled by ECU and most of time it engauges at preset RPM's. on J30A1 (6gen AV6 engine) VTEC engauges at 3,500 RPM, but VTEC not always engauges at 3,500RPM, ECU will look at car speed, throttle position, atmospheric pressure, engine oil temperature to determine if it will let VTEC to work.
most of time it will engauge VTEC. there is only one reason for VTEC not to engauge under normal condition and that would be low oil level. any other problems with VTEC would indicated by check engine light.

there is new system called i-VTEC, its avalable on K-series engines. K20 is on Civic Si and RSX. K24 is on Accord, CRV, TSX and Element.
with i-VTEC there is no preset VTEC engaugement, its vary throughout RPM range.

you seems like hungry for engine information. :)
you should go to www.vtec.net to read on Honda engines.
BTW, S2000 has F20C engine with VTEC, but most likely next generation gonna get K22 with i-VTEC.

VTEC kicks at 3500 on the V6's. Remove the air box and just listen for it. That'll tell ya if its working. :lol2:
