WTO Cancun:

A south Korean Man has stabbed himself to represent his disgust at the WTO.
Apparently the G-21 comprised of developing nations (numbers of countries growing hence G-20 becoming G-21) want the WTO to stop the large subsidies of Farmers that Richer countries use to maintain their farming capabilities with. EU uses heavy subsidies which one UK farmer reported is the only thing that keeps them making a profit otherwise they'd be in the red. The G-21 want this removed because they believe that their farmers would benefit as at the current time they cannot compete.
Should the 168billion dollars on subsidies be removed frmo OECD then 12 billion will go to poorer countries and the rest will go to the economies of the OECD
(source world bank figures not accurate comes from a second source *newnight* and also relies on my abillity to accurately remember the numbers.)
According to the World Bank the Developing countries would benefit more if they removed the barriers between their own markets which would see a 280billion increase going to the poorer countries.
Apparently this would only happen if the richer countries set an example.

I'm a big believer in a free market. As long as everyone gets equal access to everyone’s markets, then there is no reason to subsidize any organization. The biggest draw back to getting the farm subsidies eliminated (at least in the US) is that its congress is going to have to pass legislation do stop it. It’ll be a cold day in hell when a politician stands against the farmers. Its right behind trying to make changes to social security. Have the guts to try and fix it and you can kiss your career good-bye.

An altruistic suicide because of growth and planning. Im not saying that his disgust is dumb, Im saying his way of dealing with it it is. Im pissed, at the WTO, I think I'll kill myself, that'll show them! :banghead:
Im gonna have to agree with Yogs on this one.

did anyone watch the video?
The farmer who said that the only way farmers make a profit (UK) is by using EU subsidies was threatened by other farmers and the farmers Union for coming up with the information.
Free Trade would be a wonderful thing wouldn't it?
there was a Japanese writer who thought that Japan was losing its identity so he committed Harokiri (i think) where you commit suicide by slicing your stomach open. This was considered the ultimate protest.
I don't mean to say that people killing themselves for a cause is good what i mean to say is that some cultures are a lot different to ours and people do things in a different way.
Though i don't think an eastern protest will work on a western problem. The only way to change it would be through some sort of economic pressure. when that'll happen like Yogs said would be a cold day in hell.
Well Mr Blair is very close to that cold day and i can't see him changing any legislation (though he is kissing up to the EU because of the Draft Constitution) which would indicate that the cold day in hell is not enough to effect an easily influenced hard lined useless bastard like Blair. (hard lined to the public)

Yogz you are for a free market yet you support Bush why is that?
Bush has implemented more import taxes and probably a few subsidies as well. Surely this is against the idea of a free market.
I was just wondering.

WTO collapses
The breakdown of talks could be a major setback for the world economy, which has been teetering on the brink of recession for the past two years.

I don't support Bush blindly. I support specific actions he's taken (Iraq) but I certainly didn't support the terrifs he slapped on imported steel. There are others, but don't mistake my support for some stances for support on all stances.
I am for a free market economy in all cases. I do understand that not all other countries play under an open market rule set too so there are some exceptions to be made - but letting the market decide should be the ultimate goal. Its better for everyone in the long run.

pity everyone's still obsessed with being self sufficient. There's also the shift in what area of production the country would be focused in. Most countries would end up specialising in some area as it works to everyone's advantage this way. Though most people won't see this and probably will hate any government that tries to change their ways.
