well, try racing a 2003 cavalier, stock. I guarantee it'll take you out lol, and this is with a smaller engine with over half a liter less displacement

2.8 S-10's deserve some credit. First off, they are incredibly durable/strong. Mine hauled a Scout on a double axle trailer. Albeit it hauled it unwillingly, and I blew a header gasket, but it did it none-the-less and is still running strong. Second, they can be fast. I beat a 3.4 Camaro at around 100 mph with a car length to spare. All that and I get 25 mpg on the highway.

ive got an 85 S-10 2.8 and it has to be the slowest truck ive ever been in, but im pretty sure it will last forever.im orderin a 2.8 to 3.1 stroker kit and camshaft and lifter kit. hope thatll help me out. i cant even beat an 86 volkswagon jetta with i/e :banghead:

tazz311311, you say you can't beat a jetta. My 88 has. I have Eldelbrock Headers, a Hypertech Stage II chip, with a 3.56 rear, and traction bars. I have heard that the carb. 2.8 (pre-88') is a lot slower than the TBI version that I have. Maybe that is why so many people are complaining. I am planning on putting a Helix spacer on and maybe even a bigger Holley throttle body (it's reported to be 48% bigger). It won't beat a lot of stuff out there, but it's a good truck.

im looking into getting a 390 cfm carb. does it matter if i get a 2 or 4 barrel?

I am not sure if you can get a 4 barrel for a 2.8 because there are no 4 barrel intakes and I haven't seen an adapter plate for anything smaller than a 4.3. Even if you could, it would be too much for a 2.8. I haven't looked at bigger 2 barrel carbs though because I would have to get rid of my TBI, computer, etc. You'd have to ask someone else what is the best 2 barrel to go with if you plan to go that route. The best way to get a drastic power change out of a 2.8 that I have seen is to get the 2.8-3.4 stroker kit (not the 2.8-3.1). Or, since your truck is carbureted you can directly swap in a GM Performance 3.4 HT (unfortunately I can't do this and still keep my electronics/TBI). It still only has 160 HP, but it's got 195 ft.-lbs. of torque. I think it would be neat to see what is available to build the HT up; new cam, etc.

i thought the gm performance 3.4 was just a 3.4 with a performance camshaft?

I think you're right. I was just saying it's one easy route for you to go, and it has buildable potential. Personally, if my 2.8 gets sick I might go with the 2.8-3.4 stroker kit.

I've got over 250k on my 2.8, when it goes, I'll rebuild it, maybe put an RV cam in it and run it another 250k miles. My vote goes in favor of the 2.8.

I have a 91 Sonoma with a built 2.8 in it. (2.8L Sonoma Modification List (http://www.cardomain.com/id/quick91sonoma) We dynoed it at 347 rwhp @ 5500 rpm with a 100hp shot of nitrous. Even without the nitrous, I can walk the dog on a GT mustang or camaro Z28. On the bottle best 1/4 mile time is a 12.98 @ 105.7 mph at Gainesville Raceways, and I still get at least 19 mpg, even with the huge throttle body/injectors/processor in it..to sum it up, I LOVE my 2.8L
