Hello, my 1989 camry makes an odd noise when I try to start it every so often. It stalls and makes a screeching noise. I can sometimes reposition the wheel, and then it might work, but I'm not sure that's the answer, it works sometimes but not all the time. The problem has been going on for a while, but the car works fine once it starts. I'd really like to be able to fix the problem. Anyone have any solutions. I haven't taken it to a mechanic yet because I'd like to try to fix it without spending money. I bought the car in may, and it runs fine and works well except for the startup. Please help! Thanks

Check the tension on your Power Steraing pump.
Just adjust the belt

Hello, thanks for responding. I was just wondering how sure you are about this possibly being the solution to the problem. Thanks again.

Screeching noises usually mean worn out or out of adjustment belts. Maybe this is a good time to get all of your belts inspected. The old saying is "change your belts and hoses every 4 years." I think you're due.

Another thing to do is if replacing the belts doesn't solve the noise, then your starter is probably shot. This can also be replaced by yourself using only simple tools
