A couple real cheap things to start with is the intake and exhaust. If you get an open air filter from K&N (around $100) and gut your cats and pre-cats (if you have emissions testing then you shouldn’t do this one) which you can do yourself. After that, you’ll want a boost controller and boost gauge. The stock gauge is not accurate so don’t rely on it, so make sure you get one or could damage your turbos. With the boost gauge, you can safely take your car to 14psi (instead of the 9psi its running at now). After that, you can get a better exhaust, then larger injectors, bov, larger turbos etc.
Some people go with a little $3 valve you use on an aquarium to control the boost, but I think only the gusty make that work.
Check out http://www.dynamicracing1.com/customer/home.php?cat=49 for their suggested upgrade path (as well as materials). There are many alternative replacement parts to the ones they suggest (boost controllers range from $150 – $500) But what they suggest works as they have some of the fastest times these cars have ever done.

Hello Yogs,
Thank`s for Your advice. This link You sent is pretty temting, and I´m sure I will find some help there. What can You tell me about this old VR4,is it relayeble and how much can I safly play with this engine?Sure I would like to have newer VR4 but it was hard to wind this one and then there is the price.Thank`s again.

The 91s didn't have the best transmission in them. You won't want to put a whole lot into it (although some have and are fine). Considering the cars age, going with an open air filter and a boost controller (along with a good gauge) would be perfectly safe for your car.
The first thing you should do is have it checked out by a mechanic who knows what he's talking about. If he gives the car a clean bill of health then I'd work in those first two mods from above. If the car gives you any problems at all, you can cut the boost back from the 14 range back down until its running smooth again.
After that, putting on an better exhaust should cause any added strain to the car.
You'll want larger fuel injectors before cranking the boost past 14psi (and only a couple psi at that). Each psi you add to the car is about 10hp so a little bit goes a long way.
As long as you are not doing 4K rpm clutch dumps you won't have any more wear and tear on your car with the above mods then if you drove it without them. People with similiar mods have their cars over 200K miles on the original engine.
If you have any pictures, post them up - I'd like to see it.

6 years in a garage? You are going to want to replace all the belts and possibly the tires if it wasn't on jacks. Thats a long time to sit idle. You may also want to have the gas checked out. It could have thickened up and/or added water in the tank in that amount of time.
I can't stress enough to have it put on a flatbed and taken to a mechanic who knows what they are doing. Either he can give it a clean bill of health or make whatever minor fixes/replacements its going to need.
My 94 is pearl white but with the black leather - I can't remember ever seeing a white one with the red interior. It'll be cool to see those pics when you get the chance.

Yogs, thanks for the site, do you have any other sites? I am thinking of getting a 94 VR-4, with the HKS SSQV and the Sport Turbo Upgrade. I am still stuck on which kit I should go with. I dont want anything outrageous, something that looks clean and shows the intercooler mounted in the front. what mods would you recommend? I mean everything (turbo electronics, turbo, downpipe, exhaust, BOV, clutch, flywheel, rims, tires, strut bars, wastegate, cam gears, cams, sway bars, brakes, spark plugs, brake pads, and bulbs) if there are any that I missed please include those in your list, you can send me a pm if you can. thanks a lot!

Yeh i have heard some shady things about the first gen VR-4s too! specificaly the 91's. but then again i've seen 1st gens with 500+ hp in em... :dunno: so (aside from the tranny's which isnt the best on alot of 3/S's) is there any truth to this or is it like so much other shit out there that morons talk, simply cuz their jeleous that they dont own one??? i was actually looking at picking up a 1st gen 3/S tt, and as always i wanted to make sure... the shop that does my work can give her a once over and tell me alot of stuff, but i thought i'd see if there were any common complaints, or problematic features with the 91's (or first gens in general[tt models only...n/a getting old...need bov that will blow chicks skirts up! lol j/k]). so yeh, if anyone know's or has experience... it would be apreciated!

your best bet for a 1st gen would be a late 92 to 93
they have the better tranny's and engine(steel crank) :)
P.S. i have a early 92 with 145k on it and still kickin strong :)

sooo... say something like a '91 VR-4 120k miles, in "imaculate" condition... and "runs strong as ever", for 9k$??? would u say that, that is something i should go for? i would deff. be looking into souping it up if i were to get it! also say, same thing, but with 73k miles on it for about same price? but my question is, is it even worth it with the '91s?? cuz i will be modding it up.

Is a VR4 those kind of cars where you do simple mods to it and can gain lots of HP from those simple mods?

It is true. Gutting the cats costs nothing, open air filter is pretty cheap and a $3 part from a fish store can control your boost settings (a bit risky, but people have done it). For a hundred bucks you can get up to another 30hp or so.

A boost controller will damage the engine? Earth to xeocube - overboosting will do damage, but you are wrong about it wearing out the engine. If you're talking about the $3 valve then it would be bad for someone who doesn't know what they are doing to try it, but the blanket statement about boost controllers wearing out your engine is false.
xeocube
10-12-2003, 07:09 PM
Boosting higher means you're wearing your engine down faster. Besides that, when you get to >14psi, your tiny 9b's are solely pushing hot air, which is horrible for performance and can create knock.
Next time you say something that might damage another persons car atleast warn them of the possible dangers.

I don't know what orifice you’re pulling that information from, but you are wrong.
To much boost can cause knock, but the fact a boost controller is being used does not equate to knock. That’s a ridiculous conclusion. I’ve run 14psi on my 94 since I bought it (back in 94) and 17 psi through my 95 since I upgraded the fuel system. No engine problem in over 200K miles of combined usage.

Obviously if you have supporting mods such as propane injection/water/alcy or something of the sort you will reduce knock. Obviously if you just have a BC on there its not going to hurt your engine. But how can it NOT cause wear on your engine? What orifice I'm pulling this from? I guess my www.3si.org ? Seriously you have some issues.

Uh, just because you turn up boost doesn't mean you DO get knock. Run a datalogger with a near stock 3S runnin 14psi. You most likely will be fine. However going beyond that requires modifications, such as more and/or higher octane fuel.
Xeo, you're actin like the dude is gonna crank his boost up a little, and the car is going to explode.
Yogs has been around for a long time. I suggest you listen to him.

Yes it's not "going to explode" ofcourse not. And there doesn't have to be any knock either. The only reason I replied was because he is under the impression that doing "little mods" won't cause any wear on the engine, which is false. Especially with things like a boost controler where things get a bit more tricky.
Do as you may, turn your boost up to 20 psi if he tells you it's not going to hurt you fine with me.

Well sure, any modification that increases output will increase wear, but come on. Flooring it increases wear. Does that mean people shouldn't enjoy their car?
Anyhow, I dont think it'd be noticable wear moving from stock to 14psi.

I've been on the 3si board for nearly four years now under the same name as here.
I don't know where you are getting your numbers pulled from. Nobody here suggested turning up the boost to the limits of the controller. 20psi - please, if thats what you think putting a boost controller on means, then you need to rethink how you make assumptions.

I cant believe i wasted my time reading xeo's posts.
I am 15, and for about a year now have really wanted a 3000 GT VR4, 91-93 Model.
SInce i have been on this board and have read posts from Yogs, ive trusted every word he has said. Then some noobie comes out from the middle of no where and says hes wrong. What few posts ive made, ive gotten good answers from Yogs and trust his every word. And i dont believe that just by turning up your boost by a few psi, means your engine is gonna wear down fast, or explode. Now about the "integrity" of this board, this board covers pretty much every car ever made in the history of the world, even model cars, the main reason im here. SO people that have dream cars, like mine used to be the Toyota supra.
hope this made some sence

This is hysterical. I can't beleive you all made me read that. Xeo, and everyone else needs to settle down. To adress the original problem; installing a boost controller in NO way directly=severe engine wear or harm. Crap, I don't even remeber what else teh origninal poster wanted to know after all that.
So I'll stand up on my soapbox and talk for a minute. Xeo, you talk about how you get all your info from 3si and how great, blah blah blah. Are you even a member there? Because if you talked this kinda shit there you'd get flamed and banned faster than your computer could refresh the page. Ihate to inform you but turning your first few posts into flames is not the way to get a good name or be respected/heard here or on any board. So chill. You say you're trying to help, well then don't be so brash about it.
Secondly, I ahev noticed (and this thread shows it perfectly) that alot of you will just blindly follow what other people say just because they have alot of posts. (** This is in no way meant to disrespect Yogs. We've had differing views now and then but I still have a ton of respect for him**) But making statments like " Yogs said it...it must be right" Or "Yogs is never wrong about these cars" is stupid. He'll tell you himself, that he doesn't know everything there is to know because he's still learning too. I'm not saying it's bad to take advice from people who know a bit more but don't be too blind to find things out for yourself or to question what someone else says. Do things for yourself and you'll be alot happier and more proud in the end. *Steps down off soapbox.
You can continue with your flames now if you wish.

owe 93' VR4 (Generation 1, like yours) w/ tons of mods, though it is still very streetable car (never competed in drag). As stage 1 upgrades I have - Greddy Profec b01 boost controller, Greddy closed loop BOV, EGT and boost gauges, custom intake and exhaust, etc. In process (stage 2) - 550cc injectors, SplitSecord ARC2 fuel controller, '99 front conversion.
Even w/ Stage 1 I felt very notable acceleration (=power) increse, the only drawback in noise from the custom exaust.
I am located in Riga, which is only ~300km from you, so you may ask me directly on "how to". You can also look locally at www.3000gt.lv - a good general stuff site run by my friend.
thx,

Even w/ Stage 1 I felt very notable acceleration (=power) increse, the only drawback in noise from the custom exaust.
I am located in Riga, which is only ~300km from you, so you may ask me directly on "how to". You can also look locally at www.3000gt.lv - a good general stuff site run by my friend.
thx,

Man I cant believe I read this whole post, but I am gonna put in my 2 cents, lol just to get another post :p
I think both Yogs and Xeo r right cause no matter how u look at it, the engine is gonna wear down whether it is at 12psi or 14psi as the miles get up there thats just a fact of life as metal gets tired as it gets older so I think if you expose it to more to higher pressure it has to waer down faster, but then again I am not an engineer.
oh and lets keep down the language shell we pls, I have noticed that in this day and age of e-life being very anonymous it is to easy to cuss and get on someone , this u would never do person to person would ya now!! I have done it myself , I got on the 3s board into a pissing match and I regretted it, I deleted the thread and e-mailed the person and we made up!! I have vowed never to do it again!
Y'all have a great day now ya hear!!
