1993 ranger problems

ok ive had my truck for a while now and its startin to act really funny on me. the only thing changed on it is a new exhaust(flowmaster i think). its a 4 banger manual trans and it has a new clutch.

problems:
1. less than a week ago i got the truck jiffey lubed (flushed all the fluids and refilled them all) so they are all filled and the gauge says that the oil is less than half full. i checked the stick and that says its full. the check oil light is on and every now and then it will turn off so dont know whats goin on there.
2. transmission problem: ok whenever i shift into first third and fith gears(all the forward gears like the stick is forward) there is a somewhat loud buzzing grinding kinda noise. i had my friend listen to it and he said that it could be a bearing in the transmission. (what do u guys think)
3. leaking fuel: this i think is kinda serious. i filled up my gas tank completly and when i was done i looked under the truck and where the fuel reaches the gas tank through the hose like thing(dont know the right name) gas was flowing down the under side of the truck into a puddle like a square foot wide. and sometimes when i give it full throttle after wards i can smell gas through the airvents...
4. and like alot of other people posting problems i get white and black smoke coming out of the tailpipe...
all help is appreciated

thanks guys...

the man. trans. could be a synchronizer...to match gear speeds..could try a trans. fluid swap...then last resort, take it into a trans. shop

I don't know for sure, but my ranger (1990) has an oil pressure gauge, not a gauge that measures the amount, and i would guess that your's is the same, so when it is atr half, that means that your oil pressure is just right, but i can't say why it goes to zero, you sending unit may be bad.

as for the tranny, the synchros sound like a probability, but i would change the fluid first, it may be low or to thin by now

as for the gas thing, i would fix that asap, check for a general hole or maybe some rust, or, if worse comes to worse, take it to your tranny friend and have him patch it up for you

I found this one a few years ago. The way that Ford designed the oil pressure sending units on the Rangers (and a few other models) is the sending unit sends only 3 signals to the gauge. (1) Low or no oil pressure. (2) Normal oil pressure. (3) Excessive oil pressure. What you need to do is get a manual oil pressure tester from the auto parts store (this should be about $25). Unscrew the the oil pressure sending unit from the engine, and then screw in the oil pressure tester. Now start the engine and as it warms up watch the guage, it will most likely start around 40 psi with the engine cold (~70 degrees). As the engine warms up the oil pressure will drop some (this is normal). Once the engine gets to full operating tempurature, the oil pressure should level off above 20 psi. If it does not, chances are you have a clogged pickup screen. You can change this with the engine still in the truck if you unbolt the engine mount bolts, lift the engine, and then place a 2 x 4 block between the engine mounts and the frame. If you do-it-yourself, it should take 6-8 hours to fix this.

With your gas leak.... you are right, it is a serious problem, but it is usually an easy problem to fix. Usually this is just a leaking gasket around the fuel pump/ sending unit on the top of the tank.
First, remove as much gas as possible from the fuel tank (drive it back and forth to work for a few days until it is about empty is the easy way, or syphon out the gas). If you don't drain the tank, you have to fight the sloshing of gas. Next unbolt and lower the fuel tank. Disconnect fuel lines and wire harnesses as necessary. There will be a ring around where the fuel pump/ sending unit enters the fuel tank. With a brass punch (a flathead screwdriver will work if you are very carful) and a hammer, gently drive the locking ring in a counter-clockwise direction to unscrew the ring. Lift the fuel pump/ sending unit from the tank and replace the o-ring seal. Do just the opposite to put the truck back together.

yeah, but b4 you try to change the pickup filter, you may be able to save yourself some time by checking under the valve covers. This will take some time (not 6-8 hours though...) , and some patience, but when you get the valve covers removed, you can see what shape the internals are in, like if they are covered in slug or still silver. If you see alot of build up on the rocker arms and the valves, (or you don't change you oil enough or consistently, or if you bought it from some one else who might not have) then you should close it up, and head to your local advance auto (or whatever) and get some mystery marvel oil or something of the sort to clean out your block a little, and that maybe break up what crud is blocking your oil passageways. (The mystery marvel oil stuff goes in with the oil, but the directions will explain more.)

I have a 1993 3.0 v6 ranger ..... it uses an oil level sensor unit.. attached to the side of the oil pan... with a single wire to it.... it measures oil level....not pressure.... look in your haynes manual.... mine triggers the "check engine" light at exactly one quart low.... while the oil pressure gauge shows. full normal pressure.

check and clean the wire... connect to the sensor.... this is not the standard set up ... but was also used on some earler model taraus fords as well... \

My 93 ranger had a fuel problem also and it was the fuel sending unit. You can get a used one for around 50 dollars
at a junkyard.
