A couple years ago I recieved a hand-me-down 84 monte carlo with a 229 3.8L V6 I've removed the engine, rebuilt it and primed and painted the engine compartment and inner fenders, but I don't want a car thats all show,no go. So I need help!
I'm looking at headers, and exhaust systems but I really want to put an aftermarket turbocharger in it (out of a buick) if possible.
Any suggestions (other than dropping a 350 in it) will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Also I need to know if 231 3.8L parts will work on the 229.

Hey, a turbo grand nat motor would fit nicely, and would get good props from everyone, but I imagine those are getting more and more expensive. GM performance parts has some things for the 90* V6, you should check them out. Otherwise, a Series 2 3.8L, supercharged, from a late-model pontiac/buick would probably bolt up to the trans, I am not sure, and they produce alot of torque for a V6. Then again, there is always rocket power and, of course, a 50- or 75-shot of laughing gas.

is it possible to make an intake man. from a buick bolt up to a chevy 229?

Not sure. I think the chevy 229 and buick 231 may be the same cylinder block casting. If that is the case then it should work fine. If you check out a circle-track parts site or refer to gm performance parts specialists, you will find out for sure.

If you can find a 4.3 V6,it would be perfect. The best year to go with is an 85,they are carburated. If you get one with fuel inj. you can buy an aftermarket intake for it.They have the same bore and stroke as a 350 and you can get some real good H.P. out of them.I built one for my nephew's Jeep Wrangler, went complete roller on it,heads ported & polished,it runs like a scalded dog.We put a 400TH behind it.Both eng.and trannycame out of an 85 1500 s/b truck.Damn good set up if you ask me.

The casting number for the 231 3.8 L is 109. I Don't think they are the same. the turbo 3.8 had a 8to1 compression raito. Plus diffrent pistions. by the time you spend all the money to turbo that engine you whould be ahead to get a turbo engine. 231 parts porbabally will not work. From what I have been told they are totally different engines

The 229 is basically a small block chevy with two cylinders removed, the 231 is the old buick style still used in the 3.8L cars today.
I wonder if the supercharged engine parts would retrofit onto the earlier blocks?
Not much high po parts for the 229, they have a weak bottom end anyway.
